agree with @blackbired re: whole foods--I didn't pay too much attention to organic vs non organic, but I did try to stay away from processed foods while pregnant, and picked it up while nursing--cut out all artificial sweetners, super processed junk food and snacks etc (of course I have cheats, I just ate a mini twix bar :) ).

@PurplePeony: I think I might do a little of both. There's some fruit that just does not taste as good to me from the "regular" grocery store - for example, I love cut-up organic cantaloupe from Whole Foods! Now that I'm on maternity leave & have more free time, I think I might start picking up things like that, and then give my mom more money to get a few things organic when she grocery shops.

@blackbird: I know! Though I wonder if I already "ruined" her by living off chocolate chip cookies this pregnancy, haha...

@cheesetomywhine: Thanks! That makes me feel better :)

I personally can't imagine living with my parents and not shouldering at least some of the grocery expenses...I usually try to buy food for at least one meal when we visit for a weekend, it just seems fair to me. So I would likely do some of the grocery shopping and get the organic items that really mattered to me (milk and the dirty dozen). If I were in your shoes, I'd start doing this now and would keep it up while BFing...but I buy about 75% organic (90+% when it comes to perishables like dairy, meat, and produce) anyway, so obviously my opinion is skewed that way.

ETA: just saw your last post. I'd still make it known to your mom that you'd prefer to have x, y, and z items be organic and are willing to increase your monthly payment for that. She might not totally "get it" but hopefully she'll be willing to humor you!

I think eating more whole foods in general will be FAR more beneficial than just eating organic :)

@MamaMoose: @mrsjyw: We pay them monthly to help with utilities, groceries, etc. so we aren't totally freeloaders :) But they offered for us to move in with them for about a year so we could buy a house among other reasons. Buying our own groceries would be counterintuitive to that plan, and my mom likes to do all the shopping & cooking anyway.

Honestly I think the biggest thing I want to change is just eating more whole foods/fruits/veggies. I haven't gained a lot of weight so I tell myself I am doing good, but I know my diet is not nutritious! But I wonder if that ship has kind of sailed in a way.... :(

i'd just eat what they were buying since you're living with them.

It depends what it is...I don't think organic in some things makes a difference, especially if you eat it in small quantities or if it isn't part of the dirty dozen for produce.

I eat more organic food now just because we buy more for DS and it's around so that's what I cook with for the family.

I don't think it will matter organic or not, etc... but just to eat healthy overall while nursing... I wouldn't ask my parents to change their budget for it though. If it meant sacrificing savings to adjust to a healthier diet, I would do that

I don't think it will make a huge difference. But if you do decide you want to eat organically I think you should buy it yourself. I would feel uncomfortable as it is to have my parents paying for all of my food, I would never ask them to increase their grocery budget to meet my preference.

Well, when I was pregnant I CRAVED leafy greens more than I ever craved carbs or ice cream or junk food....and when I was breastfeeding it was "JUST GIVE ME ALL THE FOOD IMMEDIATELY." (ETA: in the beginning, at least. When LO started eating solids my appetite started to regulate.) So i ate healthier when I was pregnant. Just do what works best for you and don't worry about it.

If it really concerns you, maybe stick to organic milk and the dirty dozen list?

I have been a pretty bad pregnant lady & haven't eaten very healthily. :( We have also been living with my parents for a few months, and they don't buy organic, so I just eat what they do. Before that I was at least buying mostly organic produce & dairy.

Now I am thinking I want to try to do a little better when I am nursing... But is that dumb? It seems like it probably has a bigger impact in utero anyway! And organic is more expensive so I feel bad to ask my parents to change how they shop. We'd buy it ourselves but the whole point of us living with them is to save money!

EDITED TO ADD: We contribute to grocery bills & other household expenses while living with my parents. This post wasn't as much about whether to ask my parents to spend more money - if there was a significant increase, we'd of course contribute. But since we're at their house, I prefer to just let my mom shop how she wants. I was more interested in if it's that important to change your diet when BFing if you didn't eat really healthy/organic when you were pregnant.
