I weaned my LO at 15 months, and she was down to only nursing before bed. My period came almost exactly 3 weeks after I last nursed her.

I weaned at 16 months and my period came back 3-4 weeks later. I stopped pumping around 12 months, but DD was still nursing 4+ times a day when we weaned.

I went cold turkey with weaning - I went to a conference for four days, and just didn't offer when I got back. DH took over the usual nursing times (wake up, post daycare, bed time) for a few days. I think there were two moments when she freaked out about being denied, but she was almost always easily pacified by a snack and a snuggle. By day 4, I think she had completely forgotten she had ever nursed. It was far easier than I thought it would be.

The hard part of this strategy is managing your own pain - I had to go back to pumping for about two weeks to slowly kill my milk supply.

Both times my period came back about 3 weeks after I 100% weaned. I weaned LO 1 at 11 months, and LO 2 at 13 months.

I didn't need to fully wean, but mine came back at around 11.5 months. My baby had started STTN about a month prior (so we dropped a session there) and I started dropping pump sessions at work at 11 months. I was down to one pump session at work when it came back.

FWIW, if you don't feel fully ready to give up nursing, you can keep a few nursing sessions and just drop pumping. That's what I did. At first, I dropped all pump sessions and we replaced those feeds with regular milk during weekends. I kept a morning and an evening nursing session for about 6 more months, then dropped the morning one but kept an evening one for another whole year before weaning completely (obviously you don't have to go that long but my point is that your supply adjusts).

My period came back before I weaned, but here’s what I did for weaning. I stopped pumping when DD was almost one by dropping one pump session every 3 – 4 days. I kept nursing her 2x/day (morning and bedtime) until she was 13 months and when I was fully ready to wean I dropped the nursing sessions one at a time 3-4 days apart. I never experienced engorgement at all during the process so it worked well for me!

@LCTBQE: I'll bet your period comes back when you drop the pumping. I would start with that at first if you have any desire to keep nursing your baby boy. My girl only nurses for like a minute at a time. The night time and morning time nursing sessions are the better ones at like 3 minutes. This actually makes me sad. I feel like it could be easy to wean her if I wanted to.

Mine came back a few months before I stopped BF, so no advice there. But both times I weaned (I never really pumped), I gradually dropped a session each week, so it was a 4-6 week process. The last session was the night session with each of my LOs and I remember it being very bittersweet both times.

I stopped nursing when DS was 19 months, and my period came back at 21 months. Though, it has yet to be consistent and DS is almost 4.

I wasn't pumping anymore at that point so I can't speak to that, but I was nursing 1-2x a day and my period came back within a month of weaning. I think I ovulated for the first time a week or two after I stopped.

I did have the hormone crash or whatever it is that some people get from weaning- kind of out of sorts and bummed for no reason. But it passed pretty quickly.

How quickly did it come back once you mostly or fully weaned? Just curious to hear how it's been for others. My baby is 11 months and I'm planning to wean at the end of this month, when he turns one.

Also welcome: your weaning tips and thoughts on the experience. I don't quite feel ready to wean, but I'm really mostly pumping (4x/day, I nurse 1-2x/day) and I just can't pump like this any more considering how diminishing the benefits are to the baby's health at this point. I anticipate if I stop my supply will tank and it'll just be a natural end, but who knows.
