Typically I nurse her down for naps and night but we can also hold and rock her to sleep. Now that she's six months, she will often wake up when we put her in her crib, but she knows her crib = sleep so she relaxes back down and falls asleep quickly. Hoping to avoid sleep training!

It's been papa's job. I nurse her then he swaddled her and would rock/sing her to sleep. We found that if I'm around she doesn't sleep quite as well at night. That's still kind of our routine at 8 months but the swaddle is just for show at this point. Usually by the time he comes in she's down within 10 minutes. She was a super sleeper for awhile, now she still goes down fine but wakes up during the night. For naps I either nurse her to sleep then lay her down or I just rock her and then put her down.

Naps are tough for us because LO loves movement. We either put her in the stroller, swing, or car seat. Or sometimes she'll fall asleep with a bottle in my arms.

Bed time is very different. She has her bottle and goes right to sleep (sometimes she's awake when we put her down and sometimes she isn't). She sleeps for 12 hours straight and has since 2 1/2 months. We just got lucky!

BEFORE we sleep-trained, I rocked and/or nursed her to sleep every single time. But for her naps, she would sleep for as long as 3 hours but they would ALWAYS be in my arms. I was never able to put her down and leave.

She doesn't have a set nap time where i put her now, when she falls asleep, it's nap time.lol It's usually the same time though. At night, she falls asleep around 6 or 7.

LO is a fairly good sleeper. For naps I keep an eye on the clock for when a nap might be due and then at the first sign of tiredness LO is into the cot (crib?). LO gurgles around for a while but there have only been a few times where we have had to get LO up. I think looking for sleep cues is the big thing.

I rocked my LO as a newborn. She NEVER fell asleep during feeds. But then at about 4.5 months she got sick of me rocking her. So one night I just put her down awake and 5 minutes later she was asleep!! And so that was the night I like to say she "sleep trained" herself. (however, you see on the other thread that she stopped napping at 15 months so life is not all blissful!)

First-line methods are nursing and rocking. For naps, also at times she sleeps via babywearing or going out in the stroller (usually because I have to drop-off or pick-up big sis).

@Mrs. Bee: I'm definitely not going to be able to nurse our future kids down like I'm doing now. It took a lot of trial and error before I finally figured out Lo's sleep cues/schedule. Sometimes I took her upstairs too early and she wouldn't fall asleep nursing! When she wouldn't sleep I'd keep her up another 30 mins-an hour, wait for my milk to replenish, then try again..
Lo ate a lot during her first few months of life. Haha :P

@chopsuey119: i want olive to be a flexible sleeper because we can't be as strict as we were with charlie now that we have two kids. the only problem is nursing her down doesn't work at least half the time!

@Mrs. Bee: before she started crawling out of bed (floor bed) I nursed her down to sleep about 85% of the time. Sometimes she would stay awake for a few minutes before cooing herself to sleep.
Now that she crawls I nurse her down every time. I know when she's due for a nap and bed so it only takes about 10-15 minutes.

We rocked ds to sleep at home and put him down sleeping for the first 9+ months. Daycare let him CIO for naps for about 5-10 mins and he got into a routine there of going down awake starting at 5 months. At home I tried putting him down awake for a nap and he went to sleep (at 9 months). So we kept it up once we knew he was tired and sleepy and he's done great falling asleep without crying. He fusses now and then and occasionally for naps will not sleep but will have quiet time in his crib. Usually he falls asleep though. if he full on cries we go get him and try again in a bit, but that is rare.

I went off Lo's cues. I also nursed lying down next to her. She would fall asleep and I'd leave quietly once she was out.

We rocked Charlie to sleep when he was a newborn but since he's been sleep trained for most of his life, we've always put him in his crib awake for naps and bedtime.

If you never sleep trained, how do you get your baby/toddler to sleep for naps and at night time?
