I tore with #1 and I'm so scared of that this time, it was worse than the labor. I asked my OB about it and she said she doesn't see a reason why I would tear so bad again because baby had "made a path" so it should be easier. We shall see!

I agree that a normal tear is no big deal really. I only have one and had a second degree tear with I think 4 stitches. I had no epi, novacaine or something locally for the stitches and it was unpleasant but no big deal. Certainly not worse than the nurse pushing on my stomach to help the uterus clamp down.

@scg00387: @Silva: I think it's head size and how fast the baby comes out. I only pushed for 40 min or so so she came out pretty quick. She was over 8 lbs, but her head isn't particularly large.

@Silva: I think it's head size!

I'm curious about this too. I tore and had complications following the repair so Id love to avoid all that again

I was anxious about tearing. I tore minimally with #1 - they gave me two stitches but said that they were for "aesthetic purposes" (ha!) and that most doctors wouldn't give any for what I had.
I wonder what makes someone tear- seems like there is no reason to it! My LO was 7lb 3 oz, but came out fast (less than 40 minutes of pushing). Who knows?!

Well, not quite the situation you're asking about but my sister tore with the first but not the second. Both babies were similar size, but first one came out fist pumping! I don't think there's any reasoning to it. What will be will be!

@sslm: me too! My obgyn said it was "more than a 2nd but not quite a 3rd". I didn't need any painkillers except Motrin.

I had a "deep 2nd degree" tear, whatever that means. I had lots of stitches, and even though I didn't have an epidural, I didn't really feel the tearing OR the stitches. I only have the one, but I thought my experience might make you feel better :)

I had a small tear with my first but did not require stitches. I'm hoping for the same for my second, especially since he is measuring on the smaller side.

#1 was a preemie, with no tears. #2 was 10 pounds, with stuck shoulders, which ended up in an episiotomy and 4th degree tear.

But, my situation is atypical.

Also, 6 months later, I can tell you that the tear isn't that much of a big deal. I'm all healed up. I can't sit for long periods of time still, without getting sore, but other than that it's fine.

I had a 2nd degree tear with baby 1, and didn't feel the stitches at all, even though my epi had worn off enough for me to get up and walk to the bathroom immediately after. It's really no big deal--it sounds much worse than it is, promise!

Good question!! I had a small tear (no stitches) with #1 even though she was big. Hoping the same for number two.

I did tear with #1 (second degree tear) but it was such a non-issue, I'm not worried about it with this baby. Everything I'd read said that the stitches are excruciating, even when you've supposedly been numbed up, but I had an epi that worked perfectly and I did not feel one single bit of the stitches going in. The recovery also wasn't bad - it hurt to laugh, sneeze, or cough for a few days, but not enough to need any painkillers. Seriously, it was no big deal!

i had a c-section with charlie (even though i pushed 3 hours). and even though olive was only 4 lb 15 oz, i still had second degree tears. the stitches were more painful than the labor so i hope you don't tear!
