my son is 17 weeks (4 months today...what!?) and we've gotten serious about the nighttime routine in the past 4/5 weeks...to the point where when we slept away from home this weekend it was a disaster, since we couldn't do his whole routine. He seems to be responding to it REALLY well - I do finish with nursing at night, but he always pops off awake and will drift off in his bassinet if I time it right. Usually I need to shush him a bit but I've stopped rocking it and he has adapted.
For naps, I try to follow EASY but rarely succeed. My son usually only takes naps of under an hour at the moment so I can't feed him every time he wakes up. In terms of putting him down, I do an abbreviated version of his nighttime routine minus the nursing and bath. So, diaper change, swaddle sack, book (the same one every time) and then I rock him in the rocking chair until his eyes are droopy and then put him in his bassinet. Sometimes he falls asleep, sometimes he doesn't, and if he doesn't I rock him some more and try again.
I also sing twinkle twinkle little star continuously while rocking him at nighttime and nap time, which I think he now uses as a sleep cue.
Babies are so freaking hard

we did EASY, but nursed to sleep for nighttime until maybe 4-5 months? we did the 5 S's to get her to sleep until she found her hands and we dropped the swaddle. then she looked at me like i was crazy while rocking her, so i put her in her cosleeper and she put herself to bed. i was SO lucky.

For now, I'd just start a routine. Like books, sleepsack, song, then nurse, for example. Then once you've been doing that for a while, switch it up, so it's nurse, books, sleepsack, song. Hopefully, the books/song or whatever you choose becomes a sleep cue. And the sleepsack might become a sleep association.

@fussygal: how nice of your mom!! I stay home so there isn't much chance for someone else to put her down and my boobs smell delicious. Those 4-6 wake ups sound rough!!

@MamaChin: oh mama, I feel you! DD is 15 weeks and still nurses to sleep for naps and night time (aaaand her 4-6 wake ups - a whole other story!). Sometimes she'll just pass out in someone's arms, but never mine since she knows I have the goods. I'm also terrible at picking up on her sleep cues because she has SUCH A SMALL window where she'll go down on her own. We've been very loose with her night time routine the past few weeks so I think I'm going to try harder to get a night schedule where nursing isn't the last step, but it's so hard because she will fall asleep during nursing if I move it earlier. Sigh...

I go back to work in a few weeks and even though my mom will be watching her while I WFH, I'd like her to fall asleep for her!

@MamaChin: Could you try to create new sleep associations by starting a new routine that doesn't involve nursing? It definitely might take some time to sort.

We do sleep sack, pacifier, white noise, lullaby while rocking, and into the swing. He seems to associate the white noise and sleep sack in particular with sleeping because he settles once they're both on. Timing the naps correctly is also really helpful with my LO. I know I've timed right when he drifts off easily (but I time correctly probably only half the time...we're still working on it).

@MamaChin: babies are hard, man :( I don't know if this is a good idea or not because I haven't like... done a lot of reading or anything... but I"m going through something similar over food. Long story short, LO decided she hates bottles. But she has to take bottles bc I have a low supply. After days of fighting her and her not eating other than breastfeeding (which is only half of what she needs milk wise) we decided to stop breastfeeding all together. Force her to take a bottle bc she has no other option for food, and assume she'll get used to it. We're 2 days in and its already getting MUCH better. So I guess in your situation if you really don't want to nurse to sleep anymore... I'd maybe just not nurse to sleep anymore. If she gets tired enough, she will sleep. And it might be a rough few days or week trying to teach her other sleep associations, but I bet it wouldn't take as long as you'd think?

Sigh. I think one of the problems is that she has no other sleep associations. She doesn't like the swaddle and doesn't take a paci, nor does she take a bottle so no one else can put her to sleep but me.

I try to do EASY... with varying levels of success :) (LO is only 8 weeks so we don't have a great routine yet). I usually wait for sleepy cues and then put LO in her swing, swaddled, stick in a paci, and hope for the best. That works about 70% of the time. If that doesn't work sometimes I'll swaddle her and put her in her pack n play on the bassinet attachment and rock that by hand. Also sometimes if I stroke her forehead it puts her to sleep. It's sort of trial and error every day since she doesn't really like being rocked to sleep and nursing to sleep is not an option for me.

R pretty much napped in the swing until she was about 6 months old. She didn't have set nap times until then either though.

How do you get your baby to sleep?! LO is 4 months and she's always either nursed to sleep or fallen asleep in the ergo. What is your nap routine like? Baby girl sleeps well - 2 3-hour naps and 2 catnaps before sleeping 9-7 with 1 MOTN feed - so I'm really afraid to change our routine but she can't do this forever. I also have a 20 month old running around so I can't always sit in a dark room and nurse for 20 minutes. TIA!
