Edamame beans are a favorite snack for J. I can't remember when we introduced them but they're one of our go to's at 22 months.

If you don't like cracker snacks, then go for blueberries! My son cant get enough of them! Also, the applesauce pouches are very convenient for travel.

@tlcbaby: How old is your LO?

My DS is 9 months here are some snacks I take out with us:
- Baby rice crackers
- Vege slices = carrots, capsicum, avo, cucumber etc (with the cucumber I slice a thick circle, take the skin off and cut out the middle so he holds it like a mini doughnut
- Fruit = any kind sliced up
- Egg - sometimes scrambled which I spoon feed him, otherwise hard boiled in slices which he holds
- cheese cut in slices
- grilled cheese - cut in little triangles
- home made mini muffins

If we are out during lunch etc, I take his usual lunch (usually meat and vegetables pureed up which I spoon feed him).

DS feeding himself is extremely messy! We use plastic bibs with a scoop pocket when he feeds himself so all the food he drops falls in the bib and just make sure we take plenty of wet wipes!

I didn't think about veggies, dried fruit, cheese or freeze dried fruit. Awesome - We are a little bit out from needing snacks, but I wanted to get some ideas. Especially because he is starting to crawl around and pick up other kids' snacks off the ground, but he still doesn't even really know what to do with it. :)

@MsLipGloss: I know it'll definitely all get messy but I also know I can't sit him down at mom's group with a bunch of avocado slices. Just trying to think of my least messy options! :)

@heartonastring: Great ideas! We are definitely avoiding those as well - I didn't think about making some little homemade cookies!

@Greentea: Boobs are definitely still my LO's snack of choice, too. :)
@photojane: Thanks for the tip on the raisins!

@Anagram: I like the peas idea - or I've seen small carrot bits like that too in the frozen section.

@Smurfette: The small hole makes it at least slightly more difficult to dump things out, and if she does, it is just usually one compartment (she can't quite twist the top so that the opening is over another compartment, if that makes sense) instead of the entire container.

I know our LOs are close in age, so for non-grain snacks we've been doing the Little Ducks freeze dried fruit, and just started with string cheese, which she loves. We do offer puffs and cheerios sometimes too. The Happy Baby puffs are at least gluten free if you wanted to try those.

Most things ARE messy with kids until they are older! So I do like yogurt melts, Cheerios, and raisins for the feed yourself less mess factor.

I just made some mini muffins for today's snack. Not as messy since they are smaller! I fill them with fruit so they are "healthier".

@californiadreaming, GENIUS. Didn't occur to me to put it in the formula divider!

@californiadreams, it's not really an on-the-go snack for us unless i give her Peanut Butter Fingers ala Mom. A sandwich would be a good idea, though! I just worry that E would drop it and then cry because her snack is now not edible anymore...(whereas at home, i just pick it up off the floor). Maybe you could put it on bread and cut it into little "bites"?

I would be careful with the fruit leathers and freeze dried fruits (personally) for small LO's under 1-1.5 years.. I never realized until I put them in My Fitness pal (as snacks for myself) that even though they are natural sugars, some of them are VERY high in sugar. Same as dried fruit. Something in the process of removing the water and making it more dense.

@travelgirl1: lol @ fresh air!

i was going to suggest exactly what @tinyperson: said - cheese cubes and cut up grapes. i use one of those formula dispenser containers to go that is divided into 3 sections - one for cheese cubes, one for grapes, and the third section i put cheerios or mini wheats. it depends on his mood which snack he takes so i like always having all 3.

@MsLipGloss . ALL snacks are messy in the hands of a toddler..... Never a truer word spoken! My kid makes a mess of fresh air! :silly:

We really struggled with this because I didn't want to give puffs or cheeios but also didn't want her making a mess smearing banana all over herself/me/everything all the time.

We do cubes of cheese, the toddler cookies that Mrs Hopscotch posted on the blog, cut up grapes or blueberries, breadsticks, I fill pouches with plain yoghurt, dates (i hold one and let her bite from) bananas, bread. She's 16 months now with a good amount of teeth and very capable but even before she got her molars she was good with most of it, gums are very strong.

E only has two teeth, so we do puffs and yogurt melts still. She doesn't get a lot of grains otherwise.

But she looooves mozzarella cheese sticks so i grab those more often now...and I want to try some freeze dried fruit after reading this thread! She'll also eat chopped up chicken pieces, but I don't always have some ready to go.

eta: i also make banana cookies. I make a sugar free banana bread, add an egg, then scoop it out like a cookie. She also likes peanut butter, but not everyone gives their baby that.
