My oldtime friend announced the name of her son, it's a hyphenated name, the names alone aren't too uncommon but together they sound like a rap star (there's nothing wrong with that but her family isn't really rap star material)!</p> <p>I actually really like his first name but for a girl - in fact, I was considering it (as a girl's name). </p> <p>I didn't comment about her combo choice - it's just not my business, but I did inquire about her first name choice. I didn't want to say that it's now a popular girl's name, but I did mention that it's popular. If this was before the name has been decided and it is a good friend actually asking what I thought then I would tell her the truth -- that it's not my first choice but that it's what she and her SO like that matters. I pointed out that my dad knows a male Paisley who he brings up as often as possible, and that she needs to like the pattern if she'll use the name. I also pointed out that our Scottish side of the family came from the Paisley area in Scotland, so it'd be really cool from that angle. </p> <p>When another person said she wanted to name her son Torin, I had to point out the giant cow people in World of Warcraft (which most of her friends played) were called Taurens. I confess that I still had to say "For the Horde!" sometimes after saying his name (there were a lot of "For the Horde!" shouts at the baby shower, too.)</p> <p>I didn't comment on another friend's daughter's name, Arden. It's a pretty name, but I figured (rightly) that a lot of people would call her Arwen. BUT it's not something that'll get her teased, so I didn't comment.</p> <p>If the baby's born... I pay more attention to the baby than the name.</p> <p>Maybe I'd be a better person if I just said "that's nice." There is nothing wrong with Elijah, but a few of us mentioned Spencer (her older son) would probably tease the hell out of him since he would be the ONLY one in the family who's name doesn't start with an S. Even their dog's name starts with an S. Telling them their choice in name sucks probably will just hurt their feelings. Unless you know they really do want your honesty and are trying to get your opinion and aren't just "We picked a name!" Plus names grow on you too.
