My kids also expect three books, but they're flexible. If they are bad during bedtime, then they can have books taken away from them. If LO chooses a really long book, I make sure he chooses two shorter ones.

We always warn him that the last book is coming and make him repeat that it's his last book then we "hug and kiss and say goodnight". Even when he fights us he still goes right to bed afterwards!

This is why we don't do a specific number of books, nor do we do a set time. We might read an entire book, it might be a few pages, sometimes we look at the pictures in a magazine and talk about what we see.

@mrbee: we read 3 books and everyone I know IRL thinks we're crazy!
If he starts to delay bedtime we start telling him ahead of time, "If you do X we can only read 2 books" and that helps.

The only time we don't read all the books is if its past their bedtime or they are just extra tired - either way they end up falling asleep quickly with or without books

We don't do a set number every night but some nights LO keeps asking for more books. I always tell her I'm reading one last one, and then that is it even if she asks for more. Never affects bedtime.

For my son, the answer is an emphatic NO! He needs his full three books to settle down to sleep, or he will be up for hours. We've learned the hard way that no matter how tired you are, you can't skimp on bedtime books!

For my daughter, sometimes I can convince her to just go to sleep if she's tired. But her books are shorter, so it's easier to get to 3!
