DH dropped two smartphones in water! one in a pond (he fell in fishing. HAHAHA) and the other in a both of chicken soup. yeah, seriously.

both work - but the one that went in the pond does not really. it won't turn on without being plugged in. the other one does, but sometimes the screen almost catches - as if it were sticky (it's a droid 2).

He turned it off as soon as he realized, but I don't know at what point the bottle actually opened and his phone went swimming. It's in rice now...I figure we have nothing to lose...

I saved a regular phone w/ rice, but haven't tried it with a smart phone. I left it 48 hrs. I also vacuumed it.

I've read the damage is done by electrical shorts - so turn it off/take battery out immediately and dont test it until you're sure it's dry.

Good luck!

The one time I didn't check pockets before doing laundry, I washed my dh's ipod. I put it in rice, and it turns on and plays but has no display.

It's worth a shot!

I didn't do the rice thing, but DH advised me to take out the battery immediately and do NOT try to turn it on again. He said water residue is what causes the most damage. Dry as much as possible (if rice will accomplish this then go ahead) and dry with back taken out for ideally 2 days.

My smartphone works perfectly, no button issues or anything, a year later!

Edit: by "back taken out" I mean the battery and the back cover.

i dropped my iphone in the toilet (ewwww, luckily it was before i went!) a few months back and we didn't have any rice on hand so i put it in dry oatmeal and it seems to mostly work. occasionally the volume (for the phone itself, like the noise buttons make you when push them, not for calls) will turn off/be on mute even when it's turned on but otherwise it's just fine

I did this with my iPod touch a few years ago and it made it so I could turn it on, but didn't work fully.

My sister dropped hers in water, quickly vacuumed it out, and then put it in rice for about 48 hours without turning it on. That was about 2 months ago and it's been working fine since.

Did putting it in a bag of rice actually help? How long did you leave it in there?

DH went on a bike ride this morning, and apparently he didn't tighten the cap on his water bottle, and he fished his phone out of a pool of water in the bottom of the bag...
