@QBbride: I think for now that is the hope--pump long enough for LO to get bigger and try to figure it out! It is so time consuming right now though so I am only trying to get him to latch/nurse for 5 minutes a side right now while we focus on weight gain. Hoping we can both just nurse eventually!

@Mrs. Coral: thank you for sharing your experience! I hope we can get there. The LC recommended cranial sacral therapy but it does not look like something I am comfortable with so I am hoping that time will tell!

PS we never had nipple confusion. I was terrified of that and it never materialized.

I EP'd for a month and then started breastfeeding. Still going at 5.5 months. I started pumping because my nipples were annihilated from her terrible latch. I contined pumping until they healed and tried once per day or every other day to get her to latch. Sometimes I would be so discouraged, tired, and in pain I went 3-4 days without trying to get her to latch. Finally around 4 weeks she started latching onto the nipple shield. Slowly we transitioned over to that, and then around 8 weeks ditched the nipple shield.

I think the birth process was so long and taxing for her and her mouth was so tiny and my breasts were giant and engorged--all those factors were working against us.

I will not hesitate to take this same path with future LO. Good luck mama!!

@MamaCate: I used a Medela SNS system at the hospital and we started using bottles when we got home....day 3?

@MamaCate: I'm in a similar position with my LO, I'm putting her to the breast every feed before topping her up with a bottle if she still seems hungry afterwards. The LC seemed optimistic that if I continued to offer the breast first that she would get the hang of latching better when she was a bit bigger and had more energy. I know that's not exactly answering your question since I'm not EPing but I hope that it's helpful

@autumnlove: When did you introduce bottles? We are supplementing with a syringe/tube at the moment. DH wants to do bottles and I am hesitant because of nipple confusion but I am not sure if that is really an issue.

I wasn't able to get LO to latch, and I started to EP on day 2. After a week of trying to get him to latch while pumping around the clock, I gave up. It didn't work out for us. :(

I tried to nurse LO 1-2 a day but she definitely got more bottles of pumped milk the first 2.5-3 months until it suddenly got easier! I didn't use bottles at home after that and BF went smoothly the rest of the way.

@Finfan: @Anagram: Thanks for your honesty. We have a weight check tomorrow and I am trying to be prepared for my options. It is really hard to imagine EPing for a year and giving up on how much I enjoyed nursing LO#1 but I am trying to think about what is best for LO.

@Truth Bombs: I have had a nipple shield since day 4. LO will kind of latch with it but he is not really transferring anything, and the LC had the same experience. He will not latch at all without the shield.

Have you tried a nipple shield? It was the only thing that worked to get my LO to latch

I wasn't, but I know some people have been successful and I didn't give up fully on BFing until LO was 3 months. Then I continued EPing until she was 13 months.

my LO is 2 weeks old and has not been able to latch consistently since birth and is not back at birth weight. The LC was here today and she could not get him to latch either. DH and I are talking about EP as an option but I felt like pumping was the price I paid for nursing with LO#1 and it is daunting to think about only pumping and never nursing.

So has anyone pumped initially and then been able to switch back to nursing once LO got older or bigger or better at latching? Or is that a pipe dream I should let go of?
