As PPs have said, sounds totally appropriate for the first few days and your supply sounds awesome, good job mama. I don't know how long you plan/need to EP but I found my supply was highest in those first few weeks (pumping) so keep it up, especially if you have support for helping with your kids while you are pumping - you'll be glad you did! As for waking baby up, my first was like that too, we had to wake him up for 3 weeks till he got back to his birth weight! Hopefully she's back up by this week so you don't have to keep waking her. GL!

Starting around day 3 or 4, DD was eating 16-17 oz a day. And it quickly increased from there.

@charlotte: What the actual f? I'm sorry. I don't know why nurses think they are being helpful when they do or say stuff like that. My sister had a nurse tell her she wouldn't be able to nurse her first born and it totally sabatoged her confidence and ended up FF (not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just not what she wanted.) She ended up ebf her next three kids.
I think it's great your LO is hungry! Just keep on keeping on and forget what that "nurse" said.

@simplyfelicity: thank you for the reassurance!

@Mrs. Pickle: love this visual! That makes way more sense.

Glad to be home and doing our thing and getting great support from you guys instead of crazy nurses with mixed messages. When we were still trying to nurse despite terrible latch and sleepiness: "If she was on the breast for an hour and she is rooting again already then you're obviously doing something wrong. ((Forcefully grabs DD's head and my boob)). She shouldn't still be hungry". My hospital time was pretty much marked by sobbing and feeling like I was failing and starving her and wanting to just quit.

Ok thanks guys! This sleepy newborn thing is weird and was freaking me out! And a book I have says first week 15-20 oz a day but I suppose that's towards the end of of the week and when the real milk is in?

An ounce is plenty for a 3 day old! We were measuring feeds in MLs when LO was first born.

A newborns stomach is only the size of a walnut :-) That intake sounds about right for now!

How much did they take during the first week? Our 3 day old is barely drinking an ounce every 3 hours right now. We have to wake her for every feeding and work really hard to keep her awake. It doesn't seem like enough....but her jaundice #s were low and she only lost 5% of her weight in the hospital. She's already having multiple wet and dirty diapers throughout the day.

We go back for a weight check Monday but was just curious in the meantime...is she just still in the colostrum / low needs stage?

This is totally new to me because my son nursed like a champ and was up every 2 hours without fail demanding his milk!
