Cards I ALWAYS open right away. Birthday gifts I almost always do. Christmas gifts are the only exception. When we don't see my MIL for christmas (which is usually) she ships our gifts to us and we put them under the tree to open when we do "our" christmas (which is before we start our holiday travels).
