They lowered mine several times when it was time to start pushing because I couldn't feel the contractions. However, it did not dull the actual pain of childbirth/baby coming out. I remember being able to feel everything just fine after the delivery was over.

I had awful back labor and felt so out of control until I was given an epidural. I could them feel contractions, felt when I needed to push but when they used the vacuum and did the episiotomy, I didn't feel any pain.
My left leg felt weird the next day but they said that was because DS was in a bad position (posterior and crooked) and was putting a lot of pressure on that side.

Mine stopped working twice, the second time not long after I started pushing. I got no relief from pushing, either, but it was a great motivator to push as effectively as possible.

@Pepper: no, I was in labor for 6h after I got my epi and it was a little strong. I actually had it turned off while I pushed but none of the numbness went away because it takes awhile for it to wear off and it only took me 15mins of pushing. It did allow me to feel enough to push, but it didn't allow for much pain at all, whatsoever.

I was super happy with my epi once it was placed correctly (took two tries). I could feel my legs, pressure when it was time to push, and I could feel the contractions enough to know when to push.

all morning, the epi machine was beeping on/off... i think it malfunctioned, even tho the nurses said that it was on. by the time i was pushing at 10am, i felt every contraction.

I told my anesthesiologist that I didnt want my epi too soon bc I was scared of it wearing off when I needed it most and she was like, "Why does everyone think that?? It's an IV, it can't 'run out.' We wouldnt let that happen...If you're going to get one, just go ahead and get it and don't hurt. The epi cannot run out."

So I was confused bc I see it all the time on here, but I went ahead and got one at her insistence (I was only 3.5 cm but those pit contractions were starting to really suck), and it definitely did not run out! I was so comfortable that I slept most of the tome. They woke me up to check me, I was at a 10, then I fell asleep while the dr came over, and they woke me up again when she arrived and told me to push. Ha! My parents and husband were like,"Glad YOU got so much sleep!" Bc they had to wait it out in chairs and a pullout, lol

Mine had worn off I believe. I had a lot of pressure and full ability to move and apply weight to my lower limbs and feel that I was doing so. When the doc came in I was going to mention that I thought my epi needed turned up, but to everyone's surprise I was ready to push (induction not progressing. Doc was getting ready to move to c-section and reluctantly said he would check one more time) so I did not ask it to be adjusted. The nurse may have been told to turn it down without telling me because I was having trouble with it and the needed to give me medicine to raise my bp.

The nurses turned mine off in anticipation of pushing both times. With DD, they turned it off when I was fully dialated, and I was comfortable enough to labor down for about half an hour. I could feel her while pushing, and it was kinda painful, but nothing I couldn't handle.

With DS, they turned it off at 9 cms (probably because he was my second and I was dilating quickly) but he had such a big head, it took almost two hours to go from 9 to 10 cms. I could feel everything pushing with him, and it was pretty painful. The worst part was after his delivery when the doctor had to manually remove the placenta due to cord issues. I thought I was going to pass out from that pain!

Yes, it wore off right before I started pushing (during my laboring down time). . . I had had 2 boluses (additional doses . . . it was a long induction), but it wore off at the end, and I pushed for 2 hours.

I got it right before I started pushing, I was already fully dilated. So it definitely did not wear off before I pushed - but wore off pretty quickly after! I pushed for around 15 minutes, maybe? It felt like my legs were asleep - with effort, I could move them, but it felt weird. I had no pain, only some pressure when (I think) she was actually coming out.
