They were indoor/outdoor cats but we lived in the country. Now I live in a big city and and outdoor cat would not live long. And I hate litter boxes. So I have a smallish dog. I grew up terrified of pets, especially dogs. Oddly enough, one day in my 20's I decided to conquer my fear. And I now am the proud owner of a dog (a morkie). Dogs are such lovable and endearing creatures opposed to cats that are narcissistic psychopaths, but that's part of why I love cats, lol. It's part of their cattitude :wink: My husband was not that excited when I got two cats about 4 years ago, but one of them fell in love with my husband, and converted him into a cat lover ^_^ Because I have two cats, I don't like the idea of having a dog. Cats and dogs can coexist peacefully, but it depends a lot on the cat's personality. I just love cats! My mom and sister are the same way, and they both have cats too. Now we have a lab/border collie mix and we love her! She's big enough that she can come with us on hikes and give us the feeling that she's a 'real dog' lol (neither H or I like small dogs) but small enough that she can travel with us easily. So I grew up with a beagle-ish mutt, then a golden retriever, and then a pug. I now have a corgi. I suspect we will always have at least one dog but I sort of doubt that I'll ever have the same breed that I've had before. But we also had 2 short hair cats when I was growing up and now I have a short hair and a long hair cat (although they were my husbands, not that it matters). I have an Australian shephe d. So I still have a dog, but have switched breeds. Never had cats growing up but I have two now. didn't think I'd ever be a "cat person" but it turns out I like my own cats just not anyone else's cat. @blackbird: I have a Himalayan and she's pretty much a throw pillow. I live in the suburbs now and the only preference that carried over was I like big dogs. I grew up on a "farm" (I put it in quotes because we never had our own animals other than cats and dogs, but we did rent out land to others to board their horses and cattle). We had enough land that we could easily and safely have multiple cats and dogs that lived outdoors and in out buildings. I loved those animals so much. But now I live in a suburban environment and the dogs I love the most are large working dogs and I would never have the heart to keep them indoors while DH and I are away from home all day. Plus, we're both allergic, so we couldn't keep them indoors and stay healthy! But I'm THRILLED that my brothers family (who live in my childhood home) is finally getting an old english sheep dog. We're actually in the process of trying to find a dog to get because DS LOVES dogs. My mom had a himalayan when I was a little girl. When I turned 13, we got an exotic shorthair persian. We also had a lab. I have a himalayan and an exotic persian now. They're my favorite breed of cat and I'll probably always have them. Dogs, a rabbit, rats, a mouse, lizards, a turtle, fish... I got a dog as soon as I moved out of my parents house, and I still have her. With no kids yet, so she's our baby! I've had fish, too, but don't have any currently. I don't think I'll ever not have a dog... it wouldn't feel like home without one. ETA: we always had small dogs growing up, and I got a really large breed. My dad fell in love with her, and now he has a large breed, too (as well as my mom's small dog). Currently I have a goldendoodle (poodle/golden retriever mix.) I really wanted another poodle but DH wanted a golden retriever. This was our compromise. For example, I pretty much still love all the food and music that I loved as a kid. I wonder if it's also true for pets? I grew up with dogs (Yorkies). I never had Yorkies as an adult, but I would love one later in life! But sadly, I never got another dog let alone another Yorkie.
