I grew up 1.5 hours from a coast and don't want to be any farther than that! My DH grew up in Detroit and the second he laid eyes on the ocean he 100% agreed with me.

Grew up and still live about 45 minutes from the nearest beach (bay) and 1.5 hours from our beach house, and I really don't care for the beach at all. I haven't been in about 2 years, I'm just not a beach person I suppose.

Growing up we were 2 hours from the ocean, but in the summers we spent most of our time 1 mile from the beach!

Now we live about 15 minutes from a huge beach and we go as often as possible! Ideally we will love even closer to the beach in the future. It was a big deciding factor when we bought our last house. Some towns weren't considered because they were too far to get to the ocean easily.

Growing up through post college, 20-45 minute drive. Then for 6 years, a 5-10 minute walk to the beach. We then moved over 2 hours away and we missed it so so much and realized we had to raise our kids closer to it so we bought a house a mile away from the beach! I can't imagine being even an hour from it again! We have resolved to not take it for granted again!

I grew up a few minutes away from Lake Michigan. Right now we're about 50 minutes away. I don't really want to be farther from the lake, but that's mostly because I don't want to be farther from family.

Growing up, under an hour with traffic. Now we live about a 10 minute drive from the beach. I wouldn't want to live more than an hour away. It's not like I even go to the beach that often, it just makes me feel claustrophobic to think about living so far inland. Also, I can't live without super fresh seafood.

I grew up in the VA beach area, but haven't lived closer than 2 hours from the beach since we got married. Even when we lived in Arizona, I didn't miss the beach too much - going to the beach is a fun outing, but we've always tried to make the best of the area we're in and find the beauty in each different landscape.

Other than college I've never lived more than an hour from the beach and I wouldn't want to be much further than that. During college I felt landlocked, and that was only 3 hours from the coast.
I at least need to be near a body of water (ie. lake).

I grew up less than 5 minute drive to the beach. I went to college nowhere near the ocean and it was fine because I still came home in the summertime anyway. Now we are about 30 minutes from the closest beach and a little over an hour from where I grew up. We still normally go to the beach near my parents. I couldn't live more than an hour away long term.
@Adira: There are definitely either lake or ocean people. I just can't do lakes. We went to New Hampshire in the summer growing up and the lakes just freaked me out. I'll go swimming in the ocean in Maine before a lake any day!

I grew up about an hour from the ocean, and I now live about an hour from the ocean, but it's in the North East where the water is FREEZING and it's cold at the ocean most of the time. I wouldn't care if we lived close to an ocean as long as there was a nice lake beach close by. I love lake swimming.

I grew up 45 mins-2 hours from the ocean depending on where we went. We didn't go much because my parents were homebodys and we had a pool. I went to college in the Midwest and wish I had at least an awesome lake near by. After college I moved 15 minutes from the ocean and it is awesome. I love it some much and I would definitely miss it if I moved. I think I would be ok with a lake near by though.

I grew up 20 minutes from the beach and now I live 3 hours away :( :( :( I wish we were closer!!! 6 hours round trip means we are not doing a day trip. We went twice a week or more as kids and it was one of my favorite things growing up. I'm sad my daughter doesn't get to experience the ocean that much.

I didn't grow up near the beach (3 hour drive probably?) and my parents aren't really beach people so we didn't go that often. But now that I live near the beach I love it and can't imagine being far away from it. I would move to Colorado though, because it has so much to offer otherwise.

Interesting. I grew up 2 miles from the beach (about a 10 min drive), and since then I have always been within a mile or two from the ocean or a river. I don't even like beaches, but I like to sit and watch the water. Right now we live 0.5 miles from a river and I love it. I can't imagine living more than an hour away from water.

@agold: I've always lived closer to 2 hrs so it wasn't a weekly thing for me. But I think that's part of my hesitation. I love breathing ocean air and my whole self feels better after salt water dips, whenever things are starting to feel yuck, the ocean helps. It feels like it would be leaving a lifeline even though it's not a regular one for me.

I grew up about a 10 minute drive to the beach and I have so many great childhood memories of playing there. We're about an hour away now and it's too far. My kids definitely don't get to the beach as often as I'd like. There are benefits to where we live though. My kids pick their own produce from the farm far more often than I did!

I grew up within a 30 minute drive to the beach. I get spatially disoriented when I'm too far from it. I'm in Southern California and we've talked about moving to Scottsdale or the Denver area. But I couldn't ever go farther than that and it would be a tough move. If I can't get an ocean breeze on my face at least once a week I'm convinced I will break out in hives. :silly:
ETA: @Foodnerd81: its not about the beach for me, either. I rarely go to the sand anymore. I just like ocean breeze, salt air, and the view.

For me it's not about being near a beach (though that's nice) it's more that most major cities are on the coasts or really big lake (Chicago). I can't see living more than an hour or so from a major city, especially with DH's job but we both prefer to be near a city anyway.

I grew up about an hour from the Jersey Shore but we hardly ever went- my parents were more community pool people. Now I live less than ten minutes from a city beach though a longer drive (45 minutes?) to nicer ones.

I dont think I have a maximum. I love the beach but sometimes there are many months that go by without a visit. For me being next to a big lake is just as calming. I grew up 1 1/2 hours away.
