I had a c section and I could feel my arms (they were a little tingly but not awful). They had to take LO right away to check her out bc of meconium in the water but they gave her to my husband within about 5 minutes. About 5 min after that they unstrapped my arms and laid her on my chest and helped me hold her. It wasn't really skin to skin though because she was all wrapped up (and to be honest my only thought at that point was how I was scared to drop her bc I was flat on my back and my arm was still a little weak-- I had to have DH help me hold her there). As soon as they were done stitching me up (which took like 30 min or less, and I was holding her for 20 of that) they sat me up a little bit and I got to hold her as they wheeled me into recovery and I tried to breastfeed her right then (albeit poorly bc it was just DH and I and I couldn't remember what to do lol). She was never without me until the next day when they took her to run some tests (and my mom went with her). The nurses in postpartum helped me nurse too (plus I saw LC, but they took longer to get up to us).

ETA: A pic of me holding her while I was getting stitched up. This was taken less than 15 minutes after her birth. :)

We had DD1 via c-section and DH got to bring her to me quickly after they wiped her down and swaddles her up. I didn't get any skin-to-skin with her until I was sewed up and wheeled to recovery but it wasn't long. In recovery my midwife helped me and I was able to nurse her for a while. Then they took her to the nursery for a bath while I stayed there for two hours. DH went with DD to the nursery and stayed with her until we reunited in my postpartum room. I was so wiped out from everything I slept the whole time so it wasn't a bad wait.

I had LO in a baby friendly hospital and they gave her to me immediately after and I breastfed right away and she stayed with me the whole time while we waited to go to mother and baby wing and the whole time after that too.

Both of my experiences were similar. After he was out, he was quickly checked over and then DH got to hold him while I was closed up. They bought him to me so I could see him and kiss him. As soon as I was able to sit up, I held him. I held him the whole time we were transported to the recovery room. They cleaned him up more there. I nursed in the recovery room. Then I had him while we were moved to our room.

@Mrs. Lion: oh that is tough. My son was doing good but they wouldn't let me hold him because they just wanted him to relax after a very long induction and I guess I just trusted them cause I was tired. I got to touch him and hold his hand. He had a nasal cannula and needed help with temperature but was otherwise very stable. They wheeled me in on my bed to see him!

@Trailmix: I had to wait 12 hours to hold my first! I got a quick kiss and a quick visit to the NICU but I wasn't allowed to hold him until the following morning he was born at 11:22pm.

@Trailmix: Me too :(

I didn't vote because LO was a preemie so it wasn't a typical delivery experience. I talked to my OB about how it will go if we make it to full term this time. They won't allow me to hold her in the operating room, but she will immediately come to the recovery room with me as soon as I am stitched up. I am hoping that means DH will hold her until then (I forgot to ask about that part). I would hope to delay any of the procedures until after I get to hold her and we get to attempt nursing.

If she is born early, I will definitely fight harder to see her sooner. My son was born at 12:30am and they made me wait until 7am to see him, even though my spinal block had worn off and he was doing well in the NICU. I was in shock about delivering early and didn't really think to advocate for myself. If there had been a real reason for me to not go I would have been okay (sad, but okay) but I feel like I didn't fight hard enough for it and that bothers me a little still.

They took the baby back to the labor and delivery room and I sent my husband with him. I wanted to hold him so badly. I got to hold him and nurse him probably about an hour after he was born. I had asked to hold him right away and was told I couldn't so I knew it wouldn't happen.

I voted but truthfully, they options weren't really relevant to me because I had complications with my c-section so I didn't get to hold my babies for 6-7 hours after they were born and I had to wait 36 hours before I could try nursing them. Was a bummer

After they cleaned him up, ds was placed on my chest and wheeled with me into my postpartum room. We were encouraged to try nursing shortly afterward and he spent the entire time skin-to-skin with me. Our hospital really encourages baby never leaving mom's side unless there is a medical reason for it to occur.

I didn't attempt nursing, skin to skin or hold LO. DH went with her to the nursery. They brought her to me in postpartum and we attempted nursing then.

She was fine and had a good APGAR but they said they needed to take her the nursery right away because there was meconium in my water. I don't feel like that was true, and I definitely don't think they should have gone against our wishes to have procedures and vaccines done before I got to bond with her.

@BabyPenguinXO: I think my problem had less to do with the epi vs spinal block thing and more to do with the fact that the anesthesiologist who gave me the spinal block did a terrible job. My arms were pretty shaky even with the epi - I can remember they kept putting heated blankets on me - but I was still able to hold LO without any issues. I definitely wouldn't expect your arms to be numb, the numbness should only be from the waist down.

@wonderstruck: I had a spinal block and will again becasuse my epi failed during my induction due to back surgery issues. But now that I think back I was anxious and my arms were shaking so I think I could feel them. They were out from the curtain and I didn't have anything holding them down. But yeah I might feel more comfortable with FI holding her by me until I'm stitched up. I went to a recovery room first for 2 hours before my PP room. So I'll ask what to expect if she's ok and doesn't have to go to the NICU. If she will come with me to the recovery and I can try nursing there. Or whatnot. Hopefully they know or can get me in touch with the L&D nurses who probably know the most. The MFMs don't typically do any deliveries.

I delivered in two different hospitals, so slightly sidderent experiences:

LO #1 - Emergency c-section via epidural. I was able to immediately hold him and he stayed in my arms as they rolled me into the recovery room, where I nursed him.

LO #1 - Planned c-section via spinal block. My arms were covered by a warming device so I was not able to hold/nurse until we were in the recovery room, DH had him. They still put his head right by mine so I could see him though.

I'd just ask your ob what the hospital's policy on this typically is. If I had to go back and do it again I'd use the first hospital again.

@BabyPenguinXO: Yeah I was a nervous wreck until I heard him cry since I couldn't see anything and I was a little anxious from the get-go b/c... well, you're in surgery! Luckily DH was right there to see him and watch everything the nurses were doing to him as well as hold him. The nurse actually asked if we could attempt skin to skin after they were finished checking over him and I was like, oh yes please! I didn't think it was possible to do with c-sections. So - advocate for yourself and see what can be done :)

I had an unplanned, but not emergency c-section. I wasn't dilating during the induction so they said it was time to call it and have a c-section. I told them it was extremely important to me to hold him right away. They ended up accommodating it, even though they didn't really want to be bothered at first (though maybe that was just one nurse's attitude). Here's how it went:

- Baby lifted out of me, put in the bassinet thing, took a minute to see/hear him
- Baby brought over to me to hold on my chest. I could feel my arms but after a few minutes I got really tired and was afraid I would drop him, so I told DH they could take him.
- Nurse took DS to get cleaned up, DH went with him
- OB stitched me back up, took maybe 15 minutes?
- DH and DS met me in our delivery room, got to hold and nurse
- After a while we were wheeled to the post-partum room

DH was able to hold DS just a few minutes after he was born. I held him as soon as I was stitched up - which took about 20 minutes, and I held him as they wheeled me to the recovery room. As soon as we got there the nurses helped me breastfeed immediately. That was at most 40 minutes after he was born. We stayed together as a family in the recovery room for about 2 hours before we went up to the recovery room. DS was with us the whole time.

@oliviaoblivia: I'm actually seen by maternal fetal medicine and the regular OB staff they work with generally do all the deliveries. I don't see the OBs my care is fully done by the MFM. I guess I don't want to risk infection but I would like if they could lower the curtain for a few seconds and let me see her and get a picture of her. But becasuse im delivering early again it might be a quick thing. I delivered my son at 34 but she will be at 36 baring no other worsening complications.

@BabyPenguinXO: I'd recommend talking with your doc beforehand. There was some liability issue with putting the baby directly on my chest before cleanup/suction etc. and my doc had to get approval to do so. I guess there is greater risk of infection to the surgical site if they do that stuff so close to the incision.

Like you, mine went to the NICU after a quick peek at them and a minute to give them a kiss. I got to see them about 3 hours later. If I end up with a c-section, I'm hoping to request immediate skin-to-skin because I think my hospital typically takes them to the nursery to weigh, clean up and give them their Vit. K injection and brings them to you in recovery.

@MK0180: thanks! I remember the curtain being lower but I never got to see my son right away they took him and got him wiped off and bundled. But they put a nasal cannula on him and FI brought him over bundled up! I would have liked to see him casue I just heard "oh my gosh you're a big boy". Until I finally heard him cry! I would love for them to be able to place her on me to suction her and stuff. But I'll probably have to talk to my delivery team when I check in.

I was able to give her a kiss, but then they took her down to NICU (DH went with her.) My mom met me in recovery and tried to keep me calm since I was a wreck without my baby. I demanded being taken down to the NICU so they rolled my bed down there and I got some skin time for a few minutes before taking me back to my room, but no nursing she was on oxygen and had several wires.

I'm going to request immediate nursing with this one pending no complications with delivery. I think it will help our relationship, DD never was able to nurse and I think the lack of contact right away had to do with it. I started pumping the next day. (she was born at 11 pm and by the time we got back to my room it was 2-3 am)

The plan was for DD to stay in the OR the whole time and for her to get skin to skin right after I was closed up, but I had a cyst on my ovary that they removed. They had thought it would only take an additional 15-20 minutes to remove, but it actually ended up taking more than an hour. When they realized it was much more complicated, they send DH and DD to the nursery.

I did get to see her and nurse as soon as I was out of the OR and in the recovery area waiting for my postpartum room.

No, I gave them a kiss and they took them off (to the nursery?) DH went with them though each time. Once in PP unit they brought me LO and then I nursed.

They didn't let me hold the baby until I was in the recovery room. I had the shakes in the OR.
