@SLR: Mine was done about 25 weeks ago (I'm 35 weeks now). The lab doesn't exactly advertise this $250 cost if it's denied by insurance. And when I got the full amount and called back the first time, I was told they had no such policy but when I told her that I had spoken with someone prior to the testing and been told there was a policy, she went and spoke with her supervisor, who confirmed the policy and gave me the discounted price. Unfortunately, you're often at the mercy of who you happen to get on the phone and how much they know.

That being said, this may be one of those weird situations where you're actually going to get screwed because your insurance is covering it but not covering it much. I'm not sure if you'll qualify for the $250 price if insurance is covering some of it. Which totally sucks. I would still call the lab and see if there's anything that they can do. This is actually why I purposefully didn't pre-auth this testing, because it was cheaper for me if my insurance didn't cover it, at all, than if they had because I would have paid the full amount in deductible.

@JenGirl: Was your test fairly recent? I called the lab and wasn't told that about the $250 max. Now my insurance is going to pay a small portion (or so I'm told as of now) but my responsibility would still be $560. Wonder if I'll be able to get that down at all. Hope so!!!

Ours was covered by our insurance, but even if it hadn't been, it would've been worth the money to pay out of pocket. We had a situation where, as I mentioned above, I insisted on doing the bloodwork at 10w. Then I had my NT scan at 12w. The doctor during the NT scan saw a potential marker for Down's. But since I already had the MT21 results saying 1:40,000 chance for Down's, she said it wasn't an issue. If we hadn't already had that done, I would have been freaked out. And if I hadn't wanted it done, I then would have needed to get it done and wait 2 weeks for the results. Or I could have possibly had them suggesting an amnio.

It was also great to know so early that we were having a boy, which is why we wanted it in the first place.

I had mine done through InformaSeq at 10 weeks. It's true that there's a slightly increased risk of low fetal fraction (not enough fetal DNA) that early, but if that were to happen, the lab would just request a new blood sample, which could delay results, but no more than if you just waited to start. So the only real risk is you might have to get another draw, but even that's unlikely.

One word of caution: These tests ARE NOT 99% accurate. The companies report 99% sensitivity/specificity for some of the chromosome disorders tested, but that is not the same as 99% accurate. I calculated out my actual risks based on the lab information and the risk of Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 and Trisomy 13. At age 32, a negative result for any of the three conditions would be 99.99% accurate (negative predictive value). However, a positive result would only be actually positive 62% for Down syndrome, 20% for Trisomy 18 and 24% for Trisomy 13 (positive predictive value). So, basically, negatives should be reassuring but false positives are common, so don't panic if you get a positive, especially for Tri 13 and Tri 18.

Also, InformaSeq has a policy that they will only charge you $250 if your testing isn't covered by your insurance. I called them prior to getting the testing and they confirmed this. When I got the bill it was for the full amount (over $900) but I called them and told them I had been told it would be $250 and they changed my bill and only charged the $250, which I was able to put on HSA.

@hellobeeboston: It's so frustrating. My insurance is stupid. It's a company self funded plan and I'm guessing they are going to be a pain on these sorts of things. This is my first year on the plan...I miss my Blue Cross!! They did say the Dr could submit a letter or medical necessity and it would be 'reviewed', but who knows what the outcome would be or how long it would take them on that.

@Mrs D: The full billable price to the insurance company for the Informaseq is $780. (At least that is what I was told today.). They do have something called LAP pricing where you can pay out of pocket at a reduced rate, but it has to be done at a LabCorp location and not my doc's office. The price I was given for this was $477.

@SLR: I did my blood test (panorama) at 9 weeks on the nose because I happened to have an appointment that day and it was the earliest I could take it! In fact it DID come back insufficient DNA and I had to retake it but that was because the nurse did not collect enough blood - not because it was too early. I retook it about 10 days later and have enjoyed knowing since 11 weeks that it's a boy and he is healthy!!

I had MaterniT21 done at 10w. They were kind of annoying at my OB about trying to insist I wait until 12w. I told them I knew for a fact that the test was ok to do when I wanted to, and that there was no reason to wait until 12w. They usually have people do it then because then they're pretty sure you're far enough along for it. The nurse told me something like if you're 9w6d, it won't be accurate. Since most people don't know when they ovulated they do it at 12w. But I worked with an RE and I knew within 1 day when I O'd.

From what I understand, at 10 weeks the DNA is all there. The MaterniT21 results are 99+% accurate starting at 10 weeks, and the material I read said nothing about it being even more accurate later in the pregnancy.

When did you have it done?

I plan to get the Informaseq screening, which can be done as early as 10 weeks. I will be 10 + 3 on Saturday and would like to do it then, but I guess I am a little fearful that it will come back with inconclusive results due to insufficient fetal DNA, or that the results would be more reliable if I wait a bit longer.

Just curious when others have done these screenings and if anyone has received inconclusive results by doing it too early.
