we have two miniature dachshunds, the Leeo (the boy) became very over protective of me during my pregnancy. Zailey (our girl) could have cared less, as the world has always revolved around her. LOL...I was very worried about Leeo once the baby was born because he has always been a mama's boy. but what would you know they have become the best of buds...Zailey is interested, not bothered, but I think will come around once Lukas can play ball with her. We have even cause Leeo sleeping in Lukas' room in the middle of the night to protect him.

@mrsbrewer: we have always slept with the bedroom door closed, but now that we are homeowners we are starting to leave it open at night. A few times recently he has gotten off the bed in the night and moved to the couch, so I'm hoping this is the beginning of a transition! When he was a puppy growing 10 lbs/month we actually bought a bigger bed!

@leialou: yay! I love seeing pics on pinterest of dogs and babies & hope we can pull that off!

@mrsbrewer: that's awesome! And it seems like quite a few people have looked into a trainer. Might be the way to go. This guy is used to plopping down on me wherever, and he sleeps in our bed... Which I regret doing now!

@MrsKMM: Oh I am TOTALLY a sucker for labs! Actually my 2 have the same parents (just different litters), the mom was a chocolate lab and the dad was a blue heeler. Obviously with my 2 they each stuck to the one breed.

My husband and I are considering paying for 1-2 sessions with a personal trainer once the time gets a little closer to see what exactly whey recommend and see what we can do in the weeks leading up. Because needless to see, these 2 are spoiled rotten.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences! He hasn't really been around little kids, just because there are none amongst our friends and family. He's been around kids around age 5 & been totally fine, but he also wasn't sharing me with them. My ILs adore him (MIL declared herself a memere when we got him lol) so I think they would love to help. I might look into baby sounds, just to see how he reacts!

@mrsbrewer: So funny! & I just saw on the June board that you're also 26! I'll be 27 in January. So many similarities haha

@MrsKMM: I also have a 100 lb lab named Bear! :-) He's a chocolate lab though :-) I'm just about 9 weeks now (I think we're both June 2015 right??) I'm concerned about this too! Our Bear is going to be 2 next week, but then we also have a smaller 55 lb blue heeler mix who will be 1 in December, so a little smaller, but much more hyper.

@MrsKMM: I knew our dog woul dbe ok, since he has always been fine around kids. I will say that getting someone to take your dog for the first week or two is a REALLY good idea. It sucks to deal with a dogs needs when you just really need/want to focus on your newborn.

We have a very spoiled Pekinese/poodle mix, and we were worried she would get jealous. But in reality she just kind of ignored LO. Now that LO is old enough and LOVES Finley, she tries to avoid her even more but it doesn't work. She's always been really good with her, even when getting her hair pulled she just has the "get away from me" attitude now that she's 4 years old.

We have two very old, but loving dogs, and I have not been worried for a second how they will react when baby girl arrives. They were so good when we introduced kittens ( not the same but you get the idea) there were no territory issues, they ignore the cats mostly and they listen when you tell them to stop doing something, mostly, if I follow it up with a treat, haha!

I also forgot to mention that we worked with a behaviorist and have developed some relaxing techniques which we are using. Also, we gave my parents DS hat and blanket for the dog to sniff and get used to the scent. I also played some baby sounds such as crying from my phone so that he got used to the noise.

Bodie was barely 3 months when I found out I was pregnant. He knew before I did - the day I took a test he was very calm (he is so hyper) and just laid with me while I waited to hear from the doctor. He knew something was going on. When I went into labor my parents took him. When we brought the baby home, we spent the first night without our dog. The next day DH picked him up, took him to the dog park to get him all nice and tired and then he brought him to the house. Bodie definitely knew something was up - he entered the house cautiously but excitedly. We introduced him to his new brother and we made it so that he "found" DS, so that Bodie will know that he belongs here. Bodie has accepted DS into the pack.

He is a very hyper and anxious dog. He loves DS and always tries to lick his feet and face (which we're not allowing) whenever we come home or when the baby starts crying. It's quite sweet, though and we always tell him "thank you" for looking out for DS while we gently push him away from his face. We have some behavior issues since he's used to being the center of attention but when he does feel jealous he acts out towards us, not DS. He's a royal pain in the ass sometimes but he has a heart of gold.

I've got a 5.5 year old lab mix who is super hyper (everyone - vet included - thinks she is like 2 years old still). I'm currently pregnant but I'm not worried about it at all. She's always been good around kids and around our good friends' infant. So I'm sure she'll be just fine with our own baby. :)

Thanks for posting this! At less than 2 weeks to go, I'm still incredibly nervous about this. We've been working with a trainer throughout the pregnancy to get some of our behavior issues (namely one pulls on the leash and the other is majorly skittish and has confidence issue), and I think it's helped a bit. My sense is that our older guy (we had him first by himself for 5 years-he's 7 now) will be majorly jealous of the baby-I don't think he'll act out or anything, but will curl up in a corner and be moody. He's my "first born";-). Our younger pup (she's 2) will be an absolute nursemaid-following me everywhere, in my face the second the baby cries to make sure I do something, etc. etc. Her biggest "crime" is licking, so I'm hoping that's all she does! I vainly hope that once this baby is perceived as a "pack" member they'll both be accepting, but I'm so nervous about it.

@MrsKMM: I definitely recommend working with a trainer now about any anxieties you have, and then bringing him/her back in soon postpartum. We are established with someone now, and she's planning on coming back when we need her to help the dogs adjust. My dogs are my absolute babies, and I know that has to change a bit, but I would move heaven and earth to 'make it work' with them and the new baby! Breed-wise they're both mixes, so hard to say what behavior we should predict!
@BabyMats: I just can't even with that picture. Cannot even. i DIE at the cuteness!

our pugs were about 7 years old when we brought LO home. they showed no indication during pregnancy that they cared, and after LO came home they were curious at first but in general didn't pay much attention. i had dreams of them all laughing and playing together, but i'm thankful that they just take each other in stride and there are no conflicts.

My dog was older 8 yrs and I was worried. She has always been super attached to me.

I had my mom bring home the babys hat and put in on the dogs bed so she could smell the baby.

Also when I came home DH had the baby so I could greet the dog alone.

We put DS on the floor in his car seat and my dog walked over, sniffed, and walked away - she could care less!!!

In the early years she would come sit by me when she heard the kids cry and would follow me to their room but as time went by she just started ignoring them - ha!

My kids are now 3.5 and 6 and sweet pup is 13.5 - she is an aussie and yes, she herds them :silly: She is also protective of them and barks at us when we are playing around - she hates it when we high five the kids! The kids love her and the feeling is mutual

Our pup was 6 months old and already a 100 pound lapdog when LO1 was born. Although we were a little worried we didn't end up having any issues. We were consistent and repetitive with the dog training and she's a great pup, eager to please. Now that the dog is 1.5 years old and LO1 is a year old they play together frequently throughout the day and the dog is very patient and doesn't even flinch when LO pulls her fur or climbs all over her. LO has recently started giving the dog treats and sometimes copies us when we use hand signal commands. lol

I have a dog that's almost 9. I think she knew when I first got pregnant, and now with 6 weeks left she is extra attached to me. I'm not too nervous; she has been around babies and she sniffs them then loose interest. She is great with toddlers never aggressive even if they do rude things to her! I think our game plan is just to reinforce her status as the lowest member of the pack and that she is not above the little baby lol!

We had the almost exact same situation as you... Our very *ahem* "indulged" (spoiled) black lab was the centre of our family life for the first 3 years of her life. She sleeps with us, got 2 walk/day minimum and was given our undivided attention when we would get home from work. She has been unbelievably fantastic with DD (now 14 months) - we call her "Saint Sophie" because she lets DD climb all over her without so much as batting an eye... I think she likes the attention. We can tell that she is a little sad about the decrease in amount of attention she receives. And she only gets one 20 min walk per day now, on work days (we take her on big adventures on the weekends, still). But I think so long as you love them and let them to continue to be apart of your lives (and your LO's life) they just adapt.
Here's a shot of DD and Soph from this evening.
