@Arden: I saw that book just the other day! I do think they should reconsider their cover though--it's a bit intense and I don't know if that's really going to inspire fearless birthing in women.

@Arden: I do! I have been trying to read a ton of positive stories to help me get over my birth with C. @Heartonastring: sent me an awesome video this morning of a successful asynclitic home birth - they tried SO many things that my doula and OB didn't think of! It made me simultaneously hopeful and ragey/regretful.

@grizz: That makes it doubly awesome!!

@Happygal: Not to threadjack, but is it possible to see two different practitioners? I have separate doctors for my endo (I see a pelvic pain specialist) and my OB needs (I see a MW). They technically belong to the same hospital-based practice, which makes record-keeping and communications a breeze, but I don't think that would be imperative...

@grizz: We seriously considered it but Michigan has a weird set of laws (ok, not weird, it's illegal, however they turn their head and evidently no one has been prosecuted for a very long time and there is talk of legalization.) At any rate, finding a doctor to do co-care is really hard and I was worried it would be a challenge to get blood work and other tests done easily even though the HB midwives all have found work arounds to get their patients the bloodwork.

Long story short, if I could have the type of set up you have available to you I would be on it in a heart beat. We do live in an ideal location though, with a hospital less than a mile from our house (no traffic ever) and then another hospital with a great nicu is 5 minutes from our house, plus ems response time is phenomenal here. Those things make it easier to consider it for us.

@grizz: I had a homebirth and while I haven't ever written my birth story, I cannot wait to have another homebirth! It was awesome.

Not only was it wonderful to have the loving support of my midwife the entire time I was in labor (23 hours), but being cared for at home afterwards was probably the best aspect. Sleeping in my own bed, eating my own food, being a family in our own home... it was just so lovely and helped me recover extremely quickly. I had a very difficult and painful labor, but I can honestly say that I am looking forward to hopefully having another homebirth in the future! Good luck with whatever you decide. :)

@grizz: that sounds like it could be the perfect balance. I will admit that I'm a wee jealous!

I moved on from my midwife and still feel a little sad about it b/c I love that model of care. She just didn't handle my endometriosis/infertility issues well at all though, and I lost trust due to misinformation she provided me. Now I'm at a big practice where I don't know who will deliver my baby when the time arrives.

Oh, I've also seen some great youtube videos of homebirths! Ever watch those?

@Happygal: I wanted a home birth with our first, but my husband wasn't completely comfortable with it. However, there's an OB who just moved to our area who does pregnancy co-management with a local group midwives. You see the midwives for smaller appointments, and you see him for milestone appointments like the anatomy scan. If you are low, low, low risk you deliver at home with the midwives, if you aren't, you deliver at the hospital with him, and a midwife from the practice acts as your doula. My hesitation for baby #2 is completely wrapped up in my horrible labor and delivery for LO #1, and he was a terrible sleeper. My husband offered the co-management option up as a compromise. The midwife I would see is a midwife/nurse practitioner who I have actually worked with, so I feel really comfortable with both her and the new OB.

@Happygal: I echo mothering.com for research and support. The whole site (in general) was a little too "doctors are evil devils with horns" for me. But you'll get a lot of advice and support from some amazing women who have done it. I loved reading the birth stories for the home/unassisted births over there.

@grizz: the site used to be a lot more active. I think once they stopped publishing their magazine, the forum activity died down. But reading so many positive homebirth stories made me consider the option at one point in time. What appeals to you about a homebirth?

I once read a story of a woman who tried to deliver a footling breech unassisted at home (yesterday's story about breech deliveries made me remember it). The foot came out, but the baby died before they could get help. She was still at peace with her decision, saying it was God's plan.
