We have a store called Plato's Closet that I take a take stuff too (I believe it's mentioned above) or any local consignment shop. Otherwise I donate to Goodwill and use it as a tax write off at the end of the year!

This is kinda late, but I second Plato's Closet, and they also have a more adult branch called Clothes Mentor--I have sold a lot of jeans and wear-to-work type stuff to both places. If you have either of those near you, it's worth a try, but you should be really selective about what you bring. They'll only take stuff that's recently/currently in style (so if you haven't worn in 5 yrs, don't bring it), plus I always steam out wrinkles first, fold neatly and put in brand name shopping bags. It really does make a difference to the people looking through your stuff and deciding whether to buy! Buffalo Exchange is a little more selective, so I'm more partial to PC. I like these places better than consignment stores because you get money right away, not just if/when your clothes sell.

Buffalo Exchange is great if they are brand name or trendy. otherwise ebay is okay but if you use paypal they charge you a percentage of your profits and its hard to move stuff for much on there. garage sales are also a good way. Advertise them on craigslist

The only place I have successfully sold clothing was at a yard sale. And most of that was never before worn branded items from when my husband was in the NFL. A good friend of mine sold some of her clothes at the same yard sale but she sold everything for a dollar. To me, that's not worth the headache. I always just donate clothes that I don't want/need any more.

@mrs. bird @sorrycharlie also wanted to say that stinks about your donation experiences :( totally uncalled for.

Having worked at nonprofits, i'll suggest (to everyone) that if you're trying to donate to a shelter or other organization that doesn't advertise they're looking for clothes or whatever you're donating to always call ahead. We always took everything people dropped off at the shelter I worked at (with smile and tax receipt) but often we simply didn't have the storage space for a lot of things and they were donated elsewhere unless there was an immediate need for them. Clothing is often toughest because shelter residents may change frequently and wear completely different sizes/seasons.

Do you have a consignment store around? They can always give you a quote and you can see if you think it's fair or if you would rather got a CL/eBay route where you could make more money.

@sorrycharlie: totally makes sense! I am picky about where I donate (I don't do the salvation army or planet aid or a lot of places it would be easy to donate to).

@bpcmarj: What about a swap of some sort? It's not $$, but you'd still get something out if it. You could see if a community center or mom's group has any you could be part of. Or you could turn the HB new England meetup into a giant sip & swap! That could be a project for you;)

@mrs. bird: omg! that's horrible of him. I feel like I could over look that a little (maybe they were in need?) but these workers were like snorting and making comments about some of the older items which made me feel really badly. I'm sure there are more shelters that would have been super grateful to receive anything, that's why I've started donating to the one my aunt knows that's over an hour away, haha! much farther but I feel like they are more appreciative if that makes sense :/

I've never had luck selling adult clothes on Craigslist or Facebook groups. It depends, I think, what brand & "type" they are. We have a few adult consignment shops in our area - and Plato's Closet takes Banana Republic and Gap. I usually list on Ebay for a week, relist at a lower price, and then if it doesn't sell take it to a resale shop. I avoid consignment and only do stores that give you cash up front - I don't want to go back or worry about them losing track of my stuff!

Just make sure if you're listing on Ebay that it is worth your $/time by searching similar items before (advanced search lets you see completed listings). Flat rate boxes are your friend for not underestimating shipping costs (make sure to block international buyers if you dont want to mess with customs forms!). I don't know how people sell things for 5 or 6 bucks - after Ebay fees & Paypal fees, I only list if I think it will sell for at least $15 (and set that as my minimum bid)

This post reminded me to renew all of my craigslist postings, thanks!

I've never successfully sold clothing, but I remember Trailmix posted a while ago about a designer consignment shop in NYC. I am considering setting up an appointment since I do have several items that are actually worth something that I don't wear any more. I think that's the best way to sell clothes since people kind of have to try them on first.

@sorrycharlie: I know someone who was in the shelter I give to, I think my respect for her experience has helped me overlook some unbecoming behavior on the part if their staff. Once we were donating a bed & some other larger items & they sent a staff member with a large moving type van. I had sent a stroller & infant carseat that were barely used from when my ex's niece was staying with us. When I went to pick up a slip for tax deductions, the stroller & seat weren't on it- the van driver took them to give to his pregnant teenage daughter without asking me or the shelter. That pissed me off, I'm sure she was in need, but I intended for it to go to one of the girls in the shelter.

@bpcmarj: @mrs. bird: I had SO many things this time last year after our wedding to get rid of..older appliances and clothes (still pretty new, but we got new things for the shower), backpacks, etc. I called Providence PD and asked for the name of a shelter that was in need and they told me one - so I went there, and they were SO OBNOXIOUS. I was honestly tempted to take it all back! I brought a coffee maker - thinking a woman who's ready to get back into an apartment of her own would benefit, for instance - and they grabbed it from the box and set it up in their little office. What the hell? they also told me to take all the backpacks back because of bed bugs (???). I was so embarrassed by how they treated my things (they basically rifled through to take what they wanted for personal use) that I've been hesitant to donate to another shelter since. Which is so depressing.

On the bright side, my aunt personally knows people that work in a recovering/battered woman's shelter (she used them, I believe, at one point) and so I've been giving her things now to donate. At least that way I know women in need are getting them, and not the social workers. Sigh.

I've given a ton of the nicer stuff to people I know (sadly, much with tags still attached). I sold some at a yard sale. The stuff that's fine, but not awesome gets donated. There is a shelter I give stuff to. I avoid some of the donation groups that sell for a profit or donate to causes I'm not down with.
