@Dandelion: Ah I see your point... if someone doesn't know they have GD then their A1C would creep up over the course of their pregnancy because they aren't trying to control since they don't know. :)

Right the bigger the placenta gets the harder it is to control your GD so the farther along you are and don't know the more and more... with even a good diet it would be harder to control.

@Raindrop: see, my thought is that they should take the a1c and if it's low, retest again in a few weeks (maybe at each monthly visit?) And then do the gtt if it's borderline or high. GD is all about the hormones and doesn't get bad until the third trimester. Once the a1c starts creeping up, then they should pay closer attention. Unless, there is a history that warrants it.

@Dandelion: Not that I know anything but maybe if you have a good diet and excerise - you can still pass the A1C and still be GD?

I was told I have GD through the one hour and 3 hour test at 10 weeks. My doctor took a A1C at 31 week... and it was 5.1 which I think is pretty low since I control it really well.

Just a thought why they might not trust A1C when determining GD. I have no idea... I just wanted to point out I have GD and a low A1C.

@coopsmama: seems like the policy should be start with a1c and then do a 1 hour if it's borderline. It's crazy backwards.

@Dandelion: I don't understand that either. I told my practice I didn't want to do the glucose tolerance test so they just did the a1c for me. It seems like that would be easier.

@lilteacherbee: The nurse just called and said I failed big time so there is no need for the 3 hour test. Blah! But I was expecting this so I am ok!

I don't understand why they don't just take a a1c for all pregnant women instead of the glucose tolerance test. They took my a1c after I failed my one hour

@autumnlove: I didn't fast for my one-hour test last time and my result was 149 I think. They wanted it below 140, so I took the three-hour and failed it too :(

So I am pretty sure I failed? 190! The legend says 70-100 are normal fasting numbers but they told me I didn't have to fast for this tolerance test so I went after lunch. :bummed:

Yes. I ended up having early onset gestational diabetes, so I spend most of my pregnancy following the diet. It was a pain, but I endured it. Good luck!

I had mine done in the reverse order, so it may not apply here at all, but I failed my one hour miserably. So badly, that I didn't even have to do a 3 hour, I was sent straight to the Diabetes Specialist that very same day. They did an AIC on me and it was 5.7.

My a1c was 5.9, so they had me do the glucose tolerance test around 14 weeks. I failed the one hour test by a few points but passed the three hour test with flying colors. I just repeated the one hour test at 26 weeks and I'm waiting to find out the results. Good luck! That glucose drink is SO gross.

Did you have to take a one hour tolerance test?

My A1C was 5.7 for my last pregnancy and the Dr just told me I had GD. I tested my blood several times a day and adjusted my diet.

My A1C is 5.8 this time but they asked me to take a one hour test. I just drank this....yum! Jk
