I had no idea there was a correlation here! Wow. Baby was OP, face up, is that why everyone else had back labor too? My left leg was numb and I could feel everything on my right side/hip completely unbearable!

I voted that it worked for a while then failed. At first it was great- I could sleep which I greatly needed because I'd also been up a looong time laboring at home. Then it eventually failed as far as contractions and pain were concerned. I eventually got to a point where I couldn't feel my legs (or move them), but could feel every contraction terribly.

@FutureMrsMcK: mine was all in my hips too! It was terribly painful to try to pull them back while they were in pain. I kept yelling "no one cares about my hip pain!" because everyone told me to push through the pain.

Actually, mine didn't fully fail...it settled in my left leg, from mid-thigh down. DH had to help me hold that leg when I was pushing because it was dead weight. 12 hours later it was still numb in spots and a nurse and/or DH had to help me walk to the bathroom. Lame.

I could feel everything when I pushed, though, and had horrendous pain in my hips. It was great motivation to get him out, lol (even though it took 2 hours...)

I didn't know what to say. It took hours to kick in, and then it only took the edge off. There was about half an hour where I didn't feel contractions. Then I could only feel it in one hip, so I guess that meant it took the edge off, but even still each contraction was hell. Then it pretty much wore off when I was pushing. I could feel all of my legs. But I think it helped with the vaginal pain.

So somewhere between failed and only kind of worked.

Back labor was terrible before the epi! I wanted to vote "marshmallows!" Because that's what I felt like I was floating on;)
Needless to say: that epi worked like a charm, baby!

And you got an epidural, did it stop working/not work at all? Reading the back labor thread it seems like there were a lot of failed epidurals!

Mine failed twice, once right at the onset of transition and the second time before pushing. I'm still glad I got it because it gave me a much needed chance to rest (I'd been up for 20 hours when I got the first one)...I firmly believe had I not had that I would have ended up with a c-sec.

I read somewhere that if you have back labor with one baby you're more likely to have it a second time. I was completely unprepared for it...if I have a second baby I'm going to focus more on learning pain management techniques. I was in so much pain all I could do was focus on breathing...I couldn't even open my eyes during a contraction! I labored sitting up in bed, hunched over, useless bloody epidural tube hanging out of my back. Probably not the most efficient way to handle it, lol.
