My family of 6 got it. We all had mild cases. My daughter got it first and had 1 day of coughing and went back to normal, then I got sick and had 20 days of vertigo and the first 10 days I felt weak, tired, anxious and congested. My husband got it but was very mild and was able to care for the kids while I just chilled out when things got too hard. My high risk son had symptoms for like 3 hours and bounced right back to normal. Honestly the worst thing was the anxiety and wondering when I was going to make a turn for the worst, or when I would need to hospitalize my child. It’s so dang crappy. If you get it, try and get outside each day to get some air and walk in your backyard. That and hot showers helped me feel better-ish.

I recently had a Covid scare, but I had been thinking, and re-thinking, and thinking about this as well. We basically would not be able to stay away from one another (2 parents vs 3 kids), so we would just plow on with masks on. Whoever that's not sicker would just have to take on the load; mostly with our almost 1 year old. Our older girls (6 & 4) can mostly fend for themselves. Would just ask family to delivery food (cooked or not).

Worse case both of us are in the hospital; sadly my parents will probably have to come live in our house full time and just pray that the kids don't have it to spread it to them. This is definitely a scenario I want to visit

@minimalistmom: I agree on it not feeling right. We got a little relaxed in the late summer/early fall where I would let my daughter play on the playground. I insisted that she had to wear a mask, even though none of the other kids were but then in mid-later fall, that got too concerning so we stopped. Yesterday we were on school grounds playing badminton together and one of her playground friends ran for her and I told him that we can't play if he doesn't have a mask. Got some major side eye from his dad but I just won't mess with this anymore when things are at all time highs.

@ChitownRo: @Mrs. Carrot: YES!! We are still behaving like we did when this all started and some of our friends and families think we are overreacting. We also live in a very conservative area and I am constantly bombarded with the whole "stay home, sheep!" and saying that this is all a hoax. It's frustrating and I don't know if we are doing this right, but living normally doesn't feel right either.

A few weeks ago we had a covid scare. DD4 got sick (mildly) and gave it to DS7 who got really sick and then I got sick the day after him. We quarantined DS right away. No going near him without a mask and he was told to stay in his room and only leave to use his bathroom. DH brought all his food to him and had him eat in his room, which we've never done before.

I quarantined myself to the guest room and only left the room while wearing a mask and washed my hands before I touched anything.

Luckily DH never got sick and the kids tests came back negative, so we guess it was just some other virus. DH mostly took care of DD and both kids had unlimited screen time. He did run to the store and get me some things. But if we were both sick we'd use a delivery service.

I'm not sure what we'd do if both DH and I were severely sick. A lot of takeout and putting food where the kids could easily access it I guess.

@katsupgirl: We always have veggie pouches, applesauce pouches, peanut butter crackers and Annie's mac n cheese on hand. I keep the freezer stocked with breakfast sausage, waffles, frozen veggies and meatballs. We also always have lots of eggs and stuff to make sandwiches. If we are in survival mode I honestly don't worry about balanced meals. I just give them whatever they will eat in the moment.

We don't have a ton of extra pantry space so I just keep things on hand I know they will eat.

@ChitownRo: Very similar position here as well. We've been very strict since this all started, and have maintained that (opted to keep kiddo virtual and we only see people we know are strict and always outside with masks on even then). Unfortunately those people are harder and harder to find, we haven't seen our families since 2019, and it's all just hard, but my fear of Covid is bigger than all that, for better or worse, who knows. Sending you all the best! <3

I feel so isolated right now bc we decided to pull the kids from school with the crazy high rates. At least in the spring the country felt somewhat united. Now, it feels like we are the only ones isolating at home. It’s so hard to safely see people in the winter... I feel so bad for my kids bc they don’t get to socialize w anyone. I wish I could find another family taking the same precautions we are so that we could pod together. But our friends are either podding with their extended families or sending their kids to daycare
Ughhhh, definitely wishing this winter away

I live in a town where almost everything can be delivered, so my big plan has always been let the kids have unlimited screen time for a week if we have to.

My worst case scenario plan (if both parents had to go to the hospital) is to have my niece drove 8 hours from Virginia and watch the kids. She already had Covid (a mild case), she’s doing online college, and she’s an EMT and good with kids. So I basically texted her back in March and was like —if we both get Covid and it’s severe, would you drop berg thing and drive immediately? And she said yes.

New plan might involve my 76 year old mom. She currently has Covid (I’m so mad about it because she’s never been careful), but luckily it seems to be a mild case for her, too). She is further away, but now that she’s had it, I guess she could be our backup to our backup plan. But it would take her like 2 days to arrive here.

Are we the same person?!? Because I’ve been very anxious about this lately too. This post reminded me that we did go through a bad flu when my DW was 12 weeks pregnant with our youngest and our older was 3. We both were so ill, our son did not get sick (and baby was fine too!) we both had high fevers, congestion, horrible coughs, sore throats, the works. I was able to take meds so I rallied in about 2-3 days, but my wife was sick for over a week and we were super scared for the baby with the fever. She couldn’t take anything other than Tylenol and went to the doctor more than once desperate...I think she ended up with an ear infection too? I medicated as much as I could for myself to stay upright and lots of tv as others said. We got through it, but I think I’ve mostly blocked it from my memory...not fun. We also all had gastro last year and we took shifts so one could rest and the other keep the kids alive. They were sick too so it was a little ‘easier’?

Currently I have a stock of meds, soups, Gatorade, apple juice, pedialyte, etc. We have lots of vitamins and supplements, and I have a plan for if one of us was ill and tried to isolate away from the others. I’m trying to remind myself we’ve made it through other difficult times but it is anxiety provoking for me for sure.

I haven't had covid but I had some version of the flu last winter, and was the sole caregiver for 12 hours of a 3.5 year old, a 1.5 year old, and a 7 year old. It was awful- I was literally crawling on the floor trying to make them food because I couldn't stand up. They watched television literally all day long. we live rurally so there aren't a lot of food delivery options. your post has made me plan to make sure i have easy to prepare foods in stock (tomato soup, frozen stuff) so that if I go down I can still get people fed. honestly i think that and having meds/extra fluids (gatorade) on hand is all you can do to prepare.

I have an almost 7yo and 2.5yo twins. We could make do with just the 7yo and would probably order a lot of takeout. The 2.5yos would be a huge challenge and the biggest source of my concern over getting exposed to COVID. It would be extremely challenging to care for them and myself.

@KT326: oh that sounds traumatic! Anticipation anxiety is a jerk. Whenever we've faced something that sucked, we survived and managed and it was fine, but anticipating it happening is sometimes seems worse than the problem itself. Thanks for sharing!

We haven't had it, but my husband works in sales and is still out in the field because his business is deemed essential (we are in SF Bay Area). He comes into contact with a lot of people so this has been in the back of our minds for awhile. We have an 8 year old (3rd grade) and a 4 year old. Our pantry is pretty stocked with quick foods they can just grab and eat but I know I can instacart things if we need to.

If we are both sick my plan is to just try and get the 3rd grader through distance learning (he is currently in the classroom part time). Homework probably won't happen depending on how sick we are. I will also email the school and let them know so if he doesn't show up on Zoom they know why.

When my youngest was 5 months old (oldest was in preschool) I ended up getting a stomach bug and was throwing up/diarrhea every 30 minutes. Of course it happened when my husband was out of town so we hunkered down in my room and I just kept the movies rolling. I don't even remember what I fed my oldest but we all got through it. I figure if I can get through that I can get through anything!

@MrsSRS: mine is 7 and not very self sufficient (by my own doing so this is helpful because I should think through how I can enable her more if god forbid something happens). Honestly my biggest concern with her is managing her anxiety if we got sick. She's very clingy and attached to us (me especially) as it is, and that lack of contact would be really hard for her.

We haven't gotten sick, but I'm a single parent so I have been trying to sort of always be fairly ready, you know? My kids are 5 and 7 so there are things they can do independently. I've been staying caught up on laundry and cleaning. Our pantry is set up so they can manage their own breakfasts and snacks easily and I have a stash of lunch and dinner things that they can do independently or that are super easy for me. If they stay fed and feed the cat and there's gatorade, tylenol, etc for illness then I feel like we would make it with a large dose of screens. I don't know how old your kids are, but if they're elementary aged that type of thing might help you feel prepared?

We had it at the same time but had very mild symptoms....neither parent got fever but had what seemed like sinus infection and loss of taste and smell. 1 kid had a fever for 1 day but then bounced back. Other 2 had no symptoms but tested positive for antibodies after the fact. This doesn't help in planning but I do want you to have examples of people that got it but it was more of a non-event. I felt lucky because we didn't find out we were exposed until 8 days after exposure so I skipped the whole anxiety stage of are we going to get it or not. We had it and were already being cautious and school was virtual so didn't expose others in the time frame we didn't know. I do have lots of premade chicken stock, applesauce and ramen that I stockpiled in case we all got sick at the same time.

@Mama Bird: my parents have now both had it and I keep wondering if it would be reasonable, if we went down, to ask them for help, but it still makes me uneasy since they're in their late 60s.
