@Pirouette: unfortunately I have been told it is more common if you have tighter abs - it's harder for them to stretch. It's also genetic so you may be lucky and not get it :) some people tell me it may heal on its own and others say given the width it could take a year. Guess we will see!

@Ree723: you don't look thick at all!! I'm really hoping it's bloat at this point and that it settles down a bit in the next few weeks.

@JoJoGirl: ouch! Is diastasis common if you have strong abs pre-preg? I'm sorry you are dealing with that!

I had pretty rockin' abs before gettin pregnant and really started showing around 20 weeks. I also got relatively severe diastasis so waiting patiently to see what will happen to my abs next at 12 days pp!

I had pretty toned abs and a flat tummy when I got pregnant and it took ages for my bump to show up! I didn't really get much in the way of bloat but I did get thicker. That drove me crazy because I just looked thick but not pregnant. I didn't start showing until 24 weeks but it wasn't until around 28 weeks that people were actually sure I was pregnant. And like Rainbow Sprinkles said, my abs came back post baby with very little effort.

Here's 11 weeks and 16 weeks.

@MsLipGloss: The best ab workout for me was p90X. I was by no means in my prime when I got pregnant (and especially not the second time around) but when I was, the p90x Ab Ripper DVD did WONDERS for my abs!

@CottonCandy: i second everything Ms. Lip Gloss said, especially keeping your abs engaged during any physical activities. I think dancing is the easiest way to develop those muscles. I've danced ballet my whole life (which is how i developed such strong abs) but i can't say i "worked at them" - i never do any abs exercises or anything. but in my dance classes my abs are fully engaged for an hour and a half, and it's really fun!

The most important "exercise" for my abs would be no processed carbs and minimal salt! In order for the hard work to really show up, a clean diet is crucial. After that, it would definitely be planks (and similar pilates moves), stability ball lifts (55-65cm ball between your ankles, lift to bring your feet up above your hips, roll the ball between your ankles 3-4 times, and then slowly lower . . . it's brutal!), and keeping my abs engaged during all physical activities. Right before I got pg, I was taking pole dancing classes - that was a great workout too!

@winniebee: oh wow! you look adorable at 11 weeks! i guess i might have to revisit waiting until July to tell work, considering it seems like we have similar body types! I wonder if i'll be the same. If you don't mind me asking, did you gain a lot of weight during pregnancy? that's my only concern about if i have a bump super early! Just want to get my expectations in order :)

@MsLipGloss: ah, thanks! i guess mine is bloat, because i think it looks similar to yours, except that I don't think i look wider yet and everything still fits the same. i don't think my ribs have widened yet either. I'm wondering if that's why i'm seeing such a distinct "bump" even though it's bloat - because the definition is still very much there but the bloat is being pushed out between my ribs?

@Modern Daisy: ha, i feel like i want to start taking daily comparison pictures! that's so crazy that it kept coming and going. if only you could choose which days for it to disappear (weddings, etc.)!
