I had it with #2 and #3. With my third, I passed the 3 hour glucose test in the second tri, but failed it in the third tri. I was able to manage with diet alone though, where with #2 I was on glipizide. It was MUCH easier with #3.

@Happygal: Well it has been a week so I will call today and see if the results are in. I don't mind, really - I feel better than I've ever felt because it forces me to eat right and take care of myself.

I had GD for both my pregnancies. The second time I had to test at 16 or 18 weeks and failed. Boo. I learned a lot more a about how to control my sugars the second time around (eat lots of small meals throughout the day to keep metabolism up), and it wasn't so bad. Both times I was able to control with diet, and both kids were smaller than average at birth (around 6 lbs).

@Happygal: He's Type 1. We've been eating healthier just in general as we are both hobby athletes and we're trying to lose weight/ overhaul our diets (well, I was before getting PG). He just eats all things in moderation rather than following a strict diet. My GD was well controlled through diet.

ETA: the Kroger monitor is $12 and a box of the On-Sync 100-ct strips is only $22!

@avivoca: That's too bad. Those strips are insanely expensive (and why I'm waiting for them to arrive via Amazon). I was able to get them covered by insurance last time though.

@avivoca: or see if your endocrinologist can give you one for free! They gave me a really nice one I'm sure they got from a medical sales person.

@Cherrybee: that's stressful. I had some high readings, but my other tests were ok. I was given an ambiguous "glucose sensitivity" label. When will you hear back?

I love hearing some people didn't get it second go round. The body works in strange ways.

I had it with both. I was tested earlier the second time around. If I recall, I didn't do the three hour test the second time. I know my OB checked my A1C though and it was slightly elevated so onward with the diagnosis. And I'm certainly more at risk now that I've had it twice. My A1C still remains at the high range of normal. To be fair, I've not been managing my diet post pregnancy either. I must do better.

I didn't have it the second time. They tested just like the first time at around 28 weeks I think? I ate much, much worse with the second pregnancy and he was a full pound bigger than the first (still only 7lbs though). Good luck!

I had it with LO1 but not LO2. I was tested at 20 weeks and 28 weeks - the 1 hour test and passed both. LO2 weighed 8 lbs 1 ounce and LO1 was 7 lbs 4 ounces so being on the GD diet with LO1 I think helped me stay healthier and eat better. With LO2, I still watched what I ate but was definitely not as strict.

I'll find out in three weeks if I have it with this pregnancy. I elected to take an early glucose test at 20 weeks and if my numbers come out high, I requested to be treated as if I had GD rather than take a 3-hour test.

I had one meal early on where I felt absolutely awful after I ate. I tested my glucose after two hours and it was 150. So I think I may have it.

As for glucometers, you don't have to have a new one. My husband is diabetic and has been using the same one for years. His endocrinologist hasn't said anything about needing a new meter every year, so I choose to follow his advice rather than an OB who doesn't specialize in diabetes.

@snowjewelz: my doctor is a health nut who runs at least 5 miles every day. He's like, "Just do the diet, no biggie." This is clearly from a man who has never been pregnant and tired! Half of my "likes" on social media are of pictures of food--I've been in denial, but I am preparing to shape things up.

@snowjewelz: well, my understanding is that while there are factors that put you at a higher risk for having GD, there's nothing you do that causes it. So I think it's out of my control (and based on my numbers, it's not looking good).

@tinyperson: interesting! My endocrinologist emphasized the importance of using current strips, but didn't mention the meter. These two are close together, so I think I'm in the clear. I assume I'll still be working with an endocrinologist to keep tabs on things, so maybe they can hook me up with a new one if necessary. Thanks for the heads up!
