@My Only Sunshine: Thank you! This is an old thread, but I am actually almost 26 weeks along right now. Funny you say you might be extra fertile since I wonder if that is my situation too. We also got pregnant on the first or second try every time we were trying, plus this current pregnant is actually an oops (we were taking a short break after the losses). Looking at the date on this thread, I wonder if I was actually pregnant when I posted and didn't realize yet. :)

To anyone who may be interested, I didn't end up with any extra tests, but I was put on progesterone for this pregnancy. No idea if it actually helped though or if this one was just meant to be.

@catlady: I'm so sorry for your losses.

I had 5 pregnancies total - chemical, healthy baby, blighted ovum, chemical, healthy baby. I never had testing. I think if I'd had the same experience multiple times in a row I probably would have asked for testing, but each of my experiences was really different.

I have no idea if this is really a thing, but my doctor mentioned offhand that it seemed like my husband and I were "extra fertile." I got pregnant every month we tried to conceive - my doc said it could be that my body got pregnant easily, even with pregnancies that didn't have a chance of "sticking."

We're done with babies now, mostly because two feels like the right size for our family, but also because those losses were really difficult physically and emotionally. Wishing you good luck soon!

@JennRimbey: Not at all. I was on the pill for 10+ years before I came off to try for the first time. It took 84 days for my first period to arrive, then my cycles were ridiculously long after that, but got progressively shorter. So like 60 days, 55 days, 45 days until after about 8 months, I got pregnant with my first miscarriage. We went to the doc expecting to see a sweet little bean with a heartbeat, and he warned us that it was too slow for the pregnancy to last. Sure enough, the next week, there was no heartbeat. I had a D&C a few days later. I was supposed to be 10 weeks at that time, but the baby was only measuring 7, and had no heartbeat...my body just missed the part where it was supposed to miscarry.

My second pregnancy was a few months later, and that ended in miscarriage at 6ish weeks. I naturally miscarried that time.

After that, my cycles were 30 days like clockwork, but I didn't get pregnant right away. It was probably another 5 months until I got pregnant with my first son.

When DS1 was 10 months, I realized I hadn't gotten my period in a while and randomly took a pregnancy test and it was positive. I had a really bad feeling about this one b/c I definitely didn't feel pregnant. Went to the doc around 8 weeks to find no heartbeat again. I had another D&C.

It took another 8 months to get pregnant the 5th time, and had a miscarriage at 6 weeks naturally. At this point, I had seen my OB who told me I was having bad luck, and I insisted that he give me the name of a RE. This wasn't bad luck. The first...even the second might have been bad luck, but not the 3rd and 4th. My RE let me know that the 3rd probably had no room to grow and also had some sort of genetic abnormality, but because they didn't do any testing on the tissue after my D&Cs, she couldn't be sure. I just find it interesting that after my uterine surgery, I got pregnant with my first cycle with her.

Well a RE ran blood work for us, and we were still told it was just bad (actually said terrible) luck. On the one hand, it's obviously good to be told there's nothing actually wrong. On the other. It is sort of a helpless feeling knowing there's nothing you can do to help the situation. Big hugs

I had three in between my 2 daughters. And this was after it took a year to conceive DD1. All three of my losses were different -- blighted ovum diagnosed at 7 weeks, a probable chromosomal issue with the fetus dying at 8 weeks (nondoubling hcg, sac size discrepancy, but a baby measuring on track with a health heartbeart) and a chemical pregnancy. Even though my OB thought I was just having a string of bad luck, he sent me for some bloodwork. Everything came out normal, and I got pregnant with DD2 a month later. I took progesterone until 12 weeks because it has always been on the low side, but looking back, i don't think it caused my losses.

My first miscarriage was at 11 weeks and genetic testing discovered our baby had T21. We were checked immediately then, and our karyotypes came back normal - so a fluke at conception.

Our next two miscarriages were earlier and not able to be tested, so we have no idea what caused them. We requested more information though, and had a full panel done - absolutely no reason for our losses, no clotting disorders, nothing.

The only thing that we kept being told was that we had "bad luck" with our embryos. It seems to just be a matter of finding the right one. Sometimes I wish I had a reason, but at the same time... I don't know, that seems scary too.

Big hugs. x

@catlady: I had three miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy. I was referred to an RE, but despite extensive testing of both myself and my husband, no cause was found. I started fertility treatments because of my age and after 4 IUI cycles, became pregnant with my son. When he was 11 months, I conceived my daughter naturally.

Not knowing why miscarriages happen is incredibly frustrating though it seems to be fairly common. Hoping you get the answers and results you need!

@catlady: I should note that I saw my OB after 4 months of trying, which was before even my first miscarriage. I demanded hormone testing because I told her that my gut told me something was off. She agreed to order it and that was when I found out that a few levels were off. I then brought that info to the RE several months later once I'd had two miscarriages and still no take home baby and we were able to hit the ground running since we already knew what was wrong. I really think that it when it comes to fertility and health stuff, you need to be your own advocate because you are the one losing sleep over this stuff... not them!

@catlady: It's definitely more scary after multiple losses. I really hope you're able to get some answers and that you don't have to settle for one if you really want another. I resent your midwife refusing to give you a referral or further testing because they're arbitrarily declaring that you don't need it. You might consider going to an OB briefly. I moved right as I was having my second, and had to go to a new OB (I hadn't started seeing midwives yet), and they were very helpful even though I was a new patient. Though my midwives here have also been happy to give me any referrals I needed to figure things out just for my peace of mind.

After my tests came back showing no clotting disorders, I was told that I had better than a 90% chance of not having another. Three with no underlying medical cause is very rare. Which is probably why insurance refuses to pay for testing before three- two is actually quite common. But it pisses me off that you have to go through three gut wrenching losses before they'll finally take shit seriously. Anyway, again, I'm sorry for your losses, and I really hope for a happy outcome for you Adam!

@petunia354: @catlady: I am not 100% sure since I'm not trying at this point but if I had another miscarriage I think I would be one and done. The miscarriages were so hard and I think it's a little different going for trying your first to trying your second. But, it's so nerve wracking and I definitely felt different after my second miscarriage then after my first. Like having two miscarriages is more of a chronic thing then just a "one time" ordeal. Idk, I had emotional difficulties during and after my pregnancy and it's really hard to think about going through all of that again. Sorry that's a ramble. I guess I completely understand and hope everything works out the way it should.

Very sorry for your loss
I had two back-to-back missed miscarriages. One around 7 weeks and one around 11 weeks. After the 2nd one my doctor (thank God) thought it was strange for someone in my good health / age (I was 31-32 at the time) to have two in a row. So when we scheduled my 2nd D&C she suggested testing the fetal tissue.
Long story short, it was found to have had a chromosomal abnormality that was indicative of there being a bigger issue and not just a freak thing. It was a partial Trisomy 18. The "partial" part is what made her think I should see a genetic counselor and get tested ourselves (DH & I).
Turns out that I have a balanced translocation between chromosomes 18 and 20. While it presents no issues in me, most of my eggs are impacted and lead to abnormal chromosomes in any "natural" pregnancies.
Our route to an eventual successful pregnancy was IVF w/PGD. We now have a spunky 18 month old son. :-)
So, while most doctors would have said "wow you just have some bad luck" mine had a feeling something was up and urged some testing (I don't like her for other reasons and ended up switching, but thank GOD for her because who knows how many more losses I would have had as over 80% of my eggs are impacted).
So, go with your gut feeling. There are a lot of relatively simple, noninvasive blood tests and such that can be done.

Lots of love to you.

Thank you to everyone for sharing their experiences! I'm surprised at how different everyone's stories have been. I'm sorry for all your losses too.

@Eko: @magnolia: @petunia354: I'm scared of trying again too. After two later first tri losses, I was shaken by how much even a chemical affected me. At the very least, I think I will try not to test so early anymore.

@Torchwood: @Shantuck: I'm in the U.S. I think part of the problem is that I use a midwife in a hospital OB practice, and they are generally against doing too many tests (which was great when I was pregnant with my LO, not so much now). So I haven't had any tests at all (except the thyroid, which my PCP did). I have asked for either tests at their office or an RE referral, and they said I didn't need them so I didn't get either. I need to figure out if my insurance will cover me seeing an RE without a referral.

To those who mentioned going with my gut, I think that's where I am getting caught up because I honestly don't know if I think there is something wrong with me. I think I am just scared of another loss and looking for anything that will make that not happen.

I had alot of much anxiety all throughout my pregnancy and it's hard for me to even think about doing it again and possibly losing another.

Also, during my testing I found out. I have MTHFR. I took prenatal with a specific kind of folate that is supposedly easiest to process.

2 m/c's (9.5 weeks and 5 weeks) and a late loss due to severe birth defects (33 weeks). All bloodwork for things like clotting issues came back normal, as well as genetic testing for common causes of the type of birth defect our daughter had.

My dad more recently got diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which is a connective tissue disorder that, according to his doctor, can cause recurrent miscarriage as well as preterm labor (which I had with my successful pregnancy). If he has it, there's a 50% chance any of his kids would have it, so it's a distinct possibility that that's the cause (though it wouldn't explain the birth defect situation, which is still considered unknown). However, my genetics counselor says I don't meet any of the standard diagnostic criteria for having EDS, so we can't be sure. She had also never heard of a connection between EDS and miscarriage. (Interestingly though, she's very sure her wife has EDS (she already had an appointment for her with a specialist to confirm), and her wife has had two miscarriages. They had to switch to my counselor being the one having the baby to avoid it happening again. So I might have actually helped her find the diagnosis for her wife's miscarriages!)

I'm very sorry for your losses. If you really feel strongly that it's more than bad luck, you can push for testing. However, insurance typically won't cover it until you've had three in a row, even with a doctor's recommendation. So be prepared to fight it out if necessary. (ETA- Just realized I'm just assuming you're in the US. If not, I don't know anything about getting testing done, so disregard!)

@catlady: Have you had any preliminary testing other than your thyroid? I'm guessing you might be in Canada since you are waiting for another loss to see an RE but where I'm at, I was able to waltz in to my OB/GYN's office and demand a standard work-up (AMH, FSH, TSH, etc.). That might be something you can do in the interim to get a better idea of what is going on (or rule out what isn't going on).

I had two consecutive losses. We tested the tissue at my recent D&C and it was some fluke genetic cause that apparently is extremely rare and unrelated to my AMA. I saw an RE because I hit a year of trying after that 2nd loss and the RE said that because I have low AMH and am now AMA the odds of catching a bad egg were greater. He said that he was confident that I still had good eggs and it was just going to be a perseverance game for me (luckily I'm a stubborn gal). I got pregnant the first full cycle after that D&C and I'm 7 weeks now. I go in tomorrow for my first ultrasound and am really hoping I caught a good egg but if I didn't, I plan to keep at it.

@magnolia: @Eko: it's comforting to know I'm not the only one scared of ttc after 2 losses. I feel like my family doesn't understand why we would question having another, they just don't get it.

I've had 2 losses since October and my doctor just ordered some bloodwork, mainly for MTHFR, some different proteins and some other stuff regarding blood clotting. I should add that my son came before these 2 losses. My doctor suspects it is just "bad luck" but offered the testing anyways, which I appreciated!

I had two recurring ones and never found out why. All the testing came back fine, which my doctor said is common.

I ended up taking baby aspirin and progesterone and got pregnant with my now 9mo.

I am scared straight of having more miscarriages. I keep asking myself if I had another miscarriage ttc #2, whether I would go through all the hassle again. Hope that some good luck comes your way. :goodluck:

@catlady: I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had one mc at 6 weeks and a missed mc and subsequent d&c at 13 weeks. My obgyn then did a saline sonogram, and thought I had a polyp. I then had a hysteroscopy and turns out I had a uterine wall (uterine septum that was splitting my uterus in two and making it difficult for fetus to be sustained). Obgyn removed that wall and I eventually got pregnant. My son is 15 months old. I'm still scared of trying to get pregnant again after the trauma of two mcs.

I hope you get some testing and some answers  its horrible feeling of not knowing why

I never found out the cause of either miscarriage. I had a MC, then DS, then MC, and now I'm pregnant with DS#2. My doctor said it was normal, so I never did further testing.

I have had two mc, a chemical and a loss at 22w. I also have a healthy DD, conceived after first miscarriage. In December we started going through testing and they found a range of problems: high FSH, low AMH, low progesterone, increased TSH and blotting clotting issues. Such a smorgasbord of problems, I thought we were doomed. I was put on progesterone and baby aspirin right away and got pregnant shortly after my HSG in February. I'm 7 weeks now and have my first scan tomorrow. I'm hoping the progesterone and aspirin does the trick. Good luck to you. I was told by my doc and others that it was just "bad luck" but it seemed to be more than that.

I'm very sorry for your losses, and I was also brushed off by my OB for having "bad luck." It infuriated me. My history was that I had 2 miscarriages before my first son, and two after him. So 4 out of 5 pregnancies ended in miscarriage. That's more than bad luck.

I insisted after my 4th that I be referred to a RE or I was going myself without a referral. My insurance didn't require one, but I wanted to go to someone that my OB had experience with.

She did every test under the sun, and found that my entire uterus was covered in scar tissue. It was so bad that one wall was connected to the other wall collapsing it. This made it incredibly difficult for implantation. She performed surgery to remove it, did a timed spontaneous cycle, and I got pregnant with my second son.

If you feel like something is wrong, don't wait. I wasn't willing to go through another loss in order to be referred. As long as your insurance company doesn't need you to have 3 miscarriages before covering you for a RE, ask for a referral from your OB and go.

PM me if you want more details!
