They gave me local anesthesia so I felt just a pinch from that. I didn't feel any pain as the doctor was putting in the stitches.

This thread and the other thread about the worst part of childbirth... have officially scared the crap out of me. Breathe... breathe. When I went to get bloodwork done last week I almost passed out and I had to remind myself to toughen up!

I had an epi, so I don't think they gave me a local for my stitches. They hurt! I feel kind of bad b/c I kept complaining to the doctor and asking when she would be done stitching me. It felt like it took forever!

@mrs. wagon: oh man.. well next time definitely let them know if you feel pain and want them to give more local and/or wait til the local makes you numb enough.

I should add that I had an epi but right before she started stitching, I said, "Um, are you going to give me a local for that?" and she was all, "No, you won't feel it." But I KNEW I would because I was feeling things down there. So she "tested me" by giving me a little pinch with some instrument and I yelled! Then she gave me the local. The moral of the story is, ask! Even if you have an epidural you can get the local as well.

@Andrea: There is also the possibility of NOT tearing. I didn't tear so no local or stitches needed. I also didn't deliver on my back or do coached pushing so I know that helped.

I told myself the weeks leading up to having DD that I was "going to get huge" until I resolved on not tearing. Lol... Kinda crazy I know but even with a very rapid delivery, it worked!

@NYCaliMama: Possibly... but she was stitching for quite a while, probably at least 15-20 minutes. When I asked her how many stitches I was getting she vaguely responded that technically you don't really count stitches, since it's all one long thread... which did not make sense to me... I was already pissed about how much pain the placenta delivery gave me! That whole part of delivery just sucked in general. The OB is one of the doctors in my practice, so I could get her again, not sure. She was also at the end of her shift during which she performed at least 6 c-sections before my delivery (who knows how many other deliveries) so she may have been rushed. Beh.

Went med-free with #2 and they gave local anesthetic for stitches. It was still uncomfortable, but she worked fast and gave me more if I asked. Getting local though is through a needle, so that alone hurts, but honestly I was so relieved to have given birth so fast it wasn't a huge deal. I probably had a ton of endorphins flowing... we literally just arrived at the unit and I delivered her within like 15 mins, if that!

@mrs. wagon: no local? that's torture! Maybe they gave it to you (it's a shot/needle too), but you felt it as a stitch? And then maybe they just stitched you up very fast without the local having enough time to have its effect? I just know, that with ANY stitching procedure, local anesthesia is a standard of care (unless it's contraindicated for some reason (allergies, patient refuses, etc). That really sucks if it was felt by you that bad! So sorry! Do you have a new OB this time around?

I had a very light epidural that was worn off by the time i got stitches and they were painful enough to make me scream. I was also kind of panicking because of all the blood...that may have exacerbated the pain in a way.

Another who had a local after natural labor. I had a lot of small tears resulting in quite a few stitches. I felt pulling and tugging, but didn't really feel the pain of the needle.

I would say not to let that be your deterrent!

By the time they got around to stitching me up, the epidural had completely worn off. The stitches weren't so bad, but I did kinda jump with each prick. I only had to have a few, though. If I had major tears, I probably would have asked for local anesthetic!

My midwife used a local anesthetic - some kind of spray and then an injection - before doing the stitches. It still hurt but I was glad it was almost over and I didn't have to try to "relax" like during contractions.

@chopsuey119: @Andrea: I had a lot of stitches because the nature of my tear (easier to heal, because I tore upwards, not down towards rectum, but tougher to stitch up) and Wagon Jr. was whisked off to nicu, but I'm sure if I had him in my arms and was trying to nurse him for the first time, I would have felt much less!!! instead I was all alone since Wagon Sr. went to nicu with him :(
