@JoJoGirl: I had/have late onset PPD with both kids. It didn't start the first time till around 10 months, and the second time it started just a couple months ago at 7 months post partum.

It definitely didn't have anything to do with breastfeeding for me. I breastfed LO1 for 6 weeks and LO2 is still breastfeeding at 9 months. I was on Celexa last time, which worked really well for me. This time I'm on Zoloft because still breastfeeding, and I don't find it as effective, but I've only been on the medication for three weeks.

Yes, it was worse the second time and I had PPA the second time that I didn't have with the first.

@Cherrybee: I am so glad you find my honesty helpful. I hope this reassures you, that while my PPD was horrible and much worse this time (due to some med changes and adjustments needed) at a month out, I am so happy and in love with my son.

@2littlepumpkins: Its funny you should say that - all we've talked about in my current therapy sessions is my relationship with LO1. We are supposed to be getting me ready for having a newborn but it always seems to come back to E.

@Finfan: me neither, different reason but I always looked at avoiding PPD as a possibility since I wasn't bf'ing and I guess I'll never know for sure but it seems to have helped!

No. We did save a lot for dh to have an extended paternity leave though! It's odd, any anxiety I have is still usually due to lo1, not lo2. But the second time, despite multiple illnesses and cold/flu season with a first time in childcare 3 yo (sooo, not exactly relaxing even when we were both home) we still seemed to coast through it this time around. It helps that lo2 was a super easy newborn!

I'm so glad you asked this question @JoJoGirl: . I seem to recall that our experiences were quite similar in that we both had colicky babies. I, certainly, put my initial depression/anxiety down to that and didn't seek help until I was pretty far gone. In truth, I never completely got right but I got well enough to cope and hide my anxiety.

This time, it hit me in pregnancy and, by 12 weeks, I wasn't well enough to go to work. My doctor initially put it down to pregnancy exhaustion but when I still wasn't better after a month in bed (and the anxiety was much worse), it clicked. Actually, if it wasn't for @ladybee: and her incredibly honest posts on here, I might have never put 2+2 together. I sought specialist help and I'm now seeing a psychologist, who will continue to see me at home once baby is here. Her team are on hand to prescribe meds the second they feel I need them. This time is NOT going to be like last time.

Couldn't you just start on something as soon as you gave birth of you were worried? Not me, but one of my best friends has had it all three times with her babes. Just gave birth and she said it has already started about four days pp.

I am not experiencing it the second time around (currently 9m pp), thankfully. With my first I weaned very quickly and I think the hormone crash sent me into a tailspin. Ended up on Zoloft for about 9m after I sought help. With my second I'm weaning VERY slowing... only dropping 1 feeding a month and so far so good.

I never was diagnosed but am positive I had it with my first. I am 4 months pp with my second and no signs so far. I think it's because I didn't attempt breastfeeding this time. The hormones really messed me up.

Yes. My depression hit hard around 14 weeks and I was suicidal by 16 weeks. I went on Zoloft after an evaluation with a psychiatrist. My OB took me off it at the start of my third trimester and I sank quickly. My MFM Doctor was very concerned for me at an u/s and put me on Celexa until I had DS2. They upped it from 10mg to 20mg then to 30mg. At 2 weeks post I was ready to pack up and leave my family. They would all be better off without me. I went back to my psychiatrist and added another medication to help me sleep.

ETA I'm 4 weeks post and feel like myself again. It's like the fog lifted.

I'm scared. And my OB yesterday suggested I go on Zoloft while pregnant.... which I'm pretty sure has been contraindicated since I'm not depressed NOW. Weird.

Anyway, made me wonder what the likelihood of needing to go on it again is...?
