But we live in a neighborhood that has a very residential feel with lots of stuff to walk to and green areas. I'd never want to live right downtown. I'm tired of multi-unit living and bad neighbors. Portland has been great at fulfilling the best of both worlds for me because it's an awesome city but we also have a big yard with grass and a garden. I lived in NYC for 15 years and I loved it but I would have been unhappy doing so with kids unless we could figure out a way to afford place with a yard and eventually a small cottage. I also love trick or treating and being a short easy drive from the woods and farms. I know people who love raising their kids in the city though.
