I don't think I'd want to be discharged after 5 hours with #1 for sure.
After I've been through it once, I may have a different opinion.

Heck no! I plan to enjoy every minute of being in the hospital! I'm a total hypochondriac and I know I'll be even crazier about my baby. So having constant supervision from a medical professional for those first few days will be extremely comforting for me.

By the second night, I was eager to be home in my own bed, but I didn't feel ready to be home with a brand new baby yet. I needed a few days to become comfortable caring for a newborn, and to know that everything was ok.

I gave birth at 7 am on a Thursday and was discharged at noon on Saturday. If I could have picked, I would have left Friday afternoon/evening I think, I had a hard time sleeping at the hospital and was feeling good by that point. But I would not have been up to leaving Thursday afternoon!

This is my third and if baby comes on its due date (Christmas eve), we will leave early.

Otherwise I like the day or two at the hospital. It gives you a little extra time to bounce back. And the food is pretty good.

I really didn't need to stay as long as we did, she was born just before midnight on Saturday, so they kept me that night and one more night, discharged us the Monday morning. Because I had a prolonged rupture they were worried about infection. I was nervous about going home even after our longer stay, but I really could have gone home much sooner.

No. No matter how good I felt I would still want to stay atleast 2 days for the baby to be monitored by a professional, especially for my first baby.

I had a fairly uncomplicated birth but labor was soooo long so I was soooo tired. Right after birth I was all full of adrenaline so there was no way I could sleep, but 5 hours later would mean getting discharged at 10 pm. I was very happy to have the security of the hospital and not have to pack up and get situated back at home right after a long labor.

YES. If I had had a normal birth, I would have had the option of leaving 6 hours after. I got stuck there for DAYS.

I despise the hospital so much now that I might have a home birth next time just to avoid the issue totally.

Yes! With both kids I was ready to leave about 12 hours afterwards (aka the next morning) and I ended up having to stay longer. I felt great after birth and would have been happy to leave within a few hours, though.

Oh I would love to be discharged just hours after giving birth! We have the option of going home 4 hrs after birth and I think I will use it next time. I was too nervous with my first LO to go home that early, aside from the fact that I had some complications from the epidural and had to stay in for an additional 24 hrs anyway. I was going stir crazy though and just wanted to get home with my LO. We don't do rooming in here so it's not like I was getting any additional sleep, and I didn't need any painkillers, so there was absolutely no benefit to being in hospital.

I will definitely be all about leaving as soon as possible next time!

Hell no. I couldn't move. I bawled my eyes out every time I sneezed I was in so much pain! I needed that hospital bed and the nurses support. Besides, I hemorrhaged right after birth and I was kind of freaked out and nervous for a couple hours.

Absolutely. I had it in my birth plan that I wanted to leave after one night, at the latest, unless there was some medical reason to stay. Well, my baby was in the NICU for a week, so when my TWO days were up, it was really hard to leave the hospital without her. Next time, I really hope to go home the next day. If it'd just been me, I'd have been good to leave about 12 hours later. As soon as my epidural was fully worn off. Hoping to avoid that all next time.

@Coco Bee: Usually PP hemorrhage is <24 hours after delivery, but in rare instances it can happen later (esp if there is retained placental fragments of something). My girlfriend insisted on being discharged before bedtime because she couldn't sleep in the hospital, and she ended up back for a few days because she bled for so long before the ambulance got her back to the hospital she needed multiple transfusions.

I had a c-section and I wasn't ready to go beyond three days.... But that's a completely different bag of apples. I have to say, after the first baby I was soooo nervous to go home, so even with a vaginal birth I don't think I could leave after just five hours.... Plus I liked feeling taken care of in the hospital, like if something weird or freaky happened with the baby I was in the right place.

@Coco Bee: I don't think it's ridiculous to leave after five hours. Think it's preference. And being that I'm two wks from due date I'm probably hyper sensitive about postpartum care. Id def consider it for baby dos!

@mrsjyw: like I said earlier, the pp care is incredible though. my midwife was always calling me just to check in so I didn't feel alone in that way. We had a 24-hour pp appt, then a 3-day appt, then a 1 week appt, then 3 and 6 weeks. Then it switched to pediatric care. For baby #2 I want to try again at the birth center, and hopefully I won't have such a hard time the next time around.
