@Orchid: That's why we did it, too. Little one was waking every 45 minutes all night long and was miserable. It did help us feel like we were making the right decision. Good luck! I promise you'll be happier when you come out the other side!

@Jess1483: thank you! You're right. At this point, I want to do it more for LO than for me, so I hope that helps make me resolute in the midst of it.

@Orchid: Yeah, it just won't get better that way. It's so hard to let them cry, but if you rescue them, you're guaranteed a LOT more crying in the long-run. I get if you just can't do it (truly, I do), but then don't do it at all. Especially at a year old.

I highly recommend the site "Troublesome Tots." She's pro cry-it-out (when necessary) and really tackles a lot of issues. This page has a ton of resources on CIO. It may really help you make a plan. http://www.troublesometots.com/cry-it-out/

@Jess1483: this makes sense and I understand. The last time we tried (around 6 months) he always made it to an hour and we swooped in. I just dread the thought of even more crying.

I'd really encourage you not to set a time limit if you're going to do it. Letting them cry for an hour before you rescue them guarantees that they've learned if they cry for an hour then you will come get them.

We initially sleep-trained at 6 months, but had to do it other times after illness or vacation (never as bad as the first time). We always did extinction.

We did, around 11 months-- extinction, no checks, first night she cried 1 1/2 hours. By night 4, she was STTN, no crying at all.

@Orchid: those first couple nights were rough but it was like a light switch for her. We've only JUST started having bedtime issues, because we moved and had some other transitions, over a year later. But even now it's not (so far) like it was. I hope it works for your little one too!

Eta and I had tried letting her cry before and she would go longer so it wasn't right for us at the time. If it's not right for you right now that doesn't mean it won't be at a later stage... All is not lost. Good luck!

@Anagram: I was thinking of doing extinction. I know he's going to cry a long time because we tried it without success before.

We ST at 12.5 months with checks starting at 5, 10, 12 minutes. Took 3 nights with 1 and 3 being roughest, crying off and on from 3-5 am. After that, she STTN. We were night weaning as well.

I did it at 16m but I did extinction. I think the longest was 45 mins (but more than once per night.) But after 4 days there was no crying at all, sttn.

If you had to sleep train a 13 month old, how long would you let them cry??

My 13 month old co-sleeps but its not really working. He starts the night in the crib (put down asleep) and then when I am ready for bed comes to my bed. He can sometimes wake up after 1 hr asleep. And so goes the night.
