I have a lady who comes once per week. She does a really thorough clean, scrubs the kitchen and bathrooms, dusts all surfaces after removing items, vacuums and mops all the floors and does general tidying up.

@mrswin: @blackbird: @abdubbs: @SleepyMonkey: Thanks so much for your input. It's good to know that my expectations aren't totally out of whack with what other people are getting. I think I need to man up and speak to her about it. Thanks again!

Not unreasonable at all. Our cleaner does pick up and cleans under them and I don't think I've ever seen a stray crumb or bit on the floor after she leaves. I would tell her what you expect and if she doesn't improve the next time or two, you can start looking for someone else.

Ours comes every two weeks - they clean all the basic things - mop the floors, dust all surfaces, vacuum, clean the counters, kitchen appliances, etc., and thoroughly clean the entire bathroom (floors, toilet, sink, bath/shower). They change the bed sheets for us (I leave a clean set on top of the bed for them) and sometimes start a load of laundry if they notice it needs to be done.

Sometimes they do other little odds and ends if they notice them (like emptying the dishwasher) but I don't expect them to always do that. They'll do a deeper clean on other areas (like inside of fridge for example) if I ask them to.

Everything, for reals. I use a company and they have a huge list of what they clean and what rooms get what detailing--bookshelves, baseboards wiped down, fan blades, windows, mop, sweep, shake rugs out, etc etc. Every other week, a new area gets a deep clean and they list what they do for us, too.

I feel less weird going with a contracted company than an individual person.

@travelgirl1: I don't think it is unreasonable at all to expect the person you are paying to clean picks things up to dust, etc. I tried to keep the conversation pretty light in tone but made sure she understood what I was having problems with. I'm not totally comfortable with someone else cleaning for me either but I just try and remember that it is her job...

@mrswin: I think that's probably what I need to do, to have a conversation, but I don't want to seem like I am being unreasonable. Having someone clean up after me still feels a little weird.

@travelgirl1: We had a similar issue with our cleaner for a while. She wouldn't move things to dust, not vacuum the bathroom floor just mop, etc and we finally just told her we weren't happy and reviewed what our expectations were. It seems to be better but my SO is always home by the time she is finished so he checks everything before she leaves and will ask her to re-do/touch up something if it doesn't look done

We have a cleaning lady once a fortnight and she's lovely and I trust her.

But, I'm just not super happy with the cleaning. I loved the first job she did, but since then I often find bits on the floor, that I would have expected to have been hoovered up. She doesn't take things off the shelves, just cleans around them and I think she does the same with the kitchen counters. The other day it looked like she hadn't cleaned under the dining table at all. She leaves the house looking nice but the more she comes, the more I think she does the basics then folds folds things and tidies to make it "look" clean, when actually, it isn't.

Am I being unreasonable with my expectations here?
