I usually work from home at the beginning when it's really bad. It's a huge pet peeve of mine when people come to work and get everyone sick. My job is pretty flexible though. But of course if you're sick for weeks, you can't stay home the entire time.

I might work from home but i very very rarely call out sick. I cant remember the last time i've taken more than one sick day in a row. The last actual sick day i took was when i had an ovarian cyst burst and i took one day :/

I stay home the first 2-3 days, when it is most contagious. I don't want to get anyone else sick...especially since I know they have kids or other circumstances. For example, I have a friend who's mom had leukemia. If she got a cold, she couldn't visit her mom. So I always felt like I didn't want to be the one passing something around. You never know how much a little cold could impact someone else. I know it's extreme but I saw what she went through and it was sad.
I try not to even go to the grocery store or anywhere else public.
I've worked in several environments (big corporate and small startup) and they've all stressed that it's important to stay home when sick.

If my schedule allows for it, I just work from home. My company has PTO but no separate sick leave, so if I take a day off then it counts towards my vacation time. I only do that if I am feeling so awful that I can't work. So far in almost three years at this company that has only happened once.

Usually yes. I got a cold about a month ago though where I lost my voice and talking made me cough uncontrollably to the point of gagging. I'm an attorney but I spend hours a day on the phone. I had to hang up on a client because 1) she couldn't understand me because my voice was basically a hoarse whisper, and 2) I was coughing and gagging. Then I went home for the day and stayed home the next day, too, till things got a little better!

Yes I go to work, which is really bad because I'm a nurse in a hospital. Unfortunately I work in an environment where they really discourage calling out, even if you are sick or in pain. It's really unfortunate.

No and I always send my team members home when they are sick. It's not good for the team if germs get passed around. Especially for those with young babies.

Nope, don't stay home with a cold. I don't get sick very often, but I actually got DD's cold last week (blame it on the weakened immune system due to being knocked up).

I rarely call out sick, unless I really can't drive or imagine myself sitting at my desk working for long. Then again, I haven't really had anything really bad/contagious either. My office's policy is if I at least go in for any amount of time, I don't have to take a day off so I'd at least somehow haul my butt there and then leave!

I work in a call center so I talk ALL DAY LONG. It is actually pretty brutal when you're stuffy b/c breathing gets a little tricky and my nasal passages become inflamed, but there is really nothing you can do. My job is pretty bad about work / life balance, and I once came in with a fever b/c you're only "allowed" two days off in a row without a doctors note and my doctor was really demeaning when I came in for a virus. Sooooo I worked with a 102 degree fever and cried at my desk. I probably should have just taken the punishment....

@OpinionsLikeKittens: Yeah, I'm hoping this cold will be done by this weekend... it will have been a week. I have sick days but it sounds weird taking it for something as common as a simple cold. Plus, I'm still functional. I still got things done this week. I probably could have worked from home on Monday and Tuesday but I actually get more work done when I'm in office verus working from home.

If it is a really bad cold, I will stay home the first couple days, just to get as much rest as possible. Usually I use up a kleenex box a day on those first days so no one wants to hear that! My colds also last approx. 2 weeks so I can't take that much time off. Luckily my boss is a bit of a germaphobe so I can stay home if I am visibly ill/being generally disgusting.

Right now I have a weird cold... my nose is slightly stuffed and I have a weird feeling in my throat and a bit of a headache/cloudiness. I've been taking ColdFX like mad and using a Saline nasal spray and I swear it's keeping whatever this is away, for the most part. I hope it doesn't turn into anything more, and I think if it does I will know tomorrow.

If I have a cold where I'm stuffy or have a cough, that can last quite a long time. I take cold medicine and I head in. I use hand sanitizer when I sneeze or blow my nose, and wash my hands often.

I always went in if there was no fever or anything. Then once I became a nanny, if it wasn't something I got from the LO I kept, I would text ahead & just say that I have a sore throat or a cough or whatever. Usually the parents didn't mind as long as I wasn't feverish. I feel like colds are weird because you feel bad but you don't always feel so bad that you just want to lay around all day & I usually regret both staying home & going to work lol

I have a cold with just a cough and sore throat and I've been going to work. I think I might have gotten someone in my vanpool sick and now I feel bad that I should have stayed home. My cough was probably worse Monday and Tuesday and I think today, I'm starting to feel a little bit better. For colds, I usually still go to work. Now for the flu with the fever and body aches, I would definitely stay home. I do have sick days but I was just on vacation and needed to get back to the office to get things done.
