For berries, you can freeze them on a sheet tray, then store them in bags.

I think ours is 14 cu ft. It's almost as big as a full fridge. And I fill that thing up. It was my favorite purchase for our new house.

@Bao: I hear you! Being able to put up summer produce without the hassle of canning was one reason I wanted a chest freezer. I keep thinking about getting a FoodSaver, too, but haven't done it yet.

@Bao: I don't know! I try to squeeze as much air out of the bag as possible but other than that, I think it's just that chest freezers work better than the ones in the fridge (having no auto defrost helps) and don't get opened as often so there's less temperature fluctuation. I just made blueberry pancakes over the weekend and the blueberries are still frost-free and delicious!

We have the same one as @mamabear57:

@PurplePeony: is there a secret to freezing berries? How do you keep them from getting freezer burnt so long?

Not sure exactly how large ours is, but it's about 4.5 feet wide by 2 feet deep? I love it!! Perfect for putting extra freezer stuff in it and for my frozen stash of BM!

@Bao: I think everything has pros and cons! My parents have an upright one and I don't like it -- yes, there's easier access to stuff, but I think food gets freezerburned faster and things are constantly jumping out when you open the door. Plus, chest freezers are cheaper to run. I definitely don't regret getting a chest freezer!

I should have mentioned, ours still isn't completely full and I have ~350 ounces of breastmilk, some crockpot freezer meals, a couple whole chickens, some ground beef and chicken breasts, some homemade bolognese sauce, pesto, and soups, berries from last summer's farmers' markets, bags of frozen veggies, and other random stuff in there. It really does hold a lot. I think if we had the 5 cu ft one, we'd be pretty much at capacity, though. So if you have a couple extra inches of space wherever you're going to put yours, I do think it's well worth going for the 7.

I got mine when we lived in an apt so I had to find the smallest. I have a 3.6 cu feet one. Now that we have the space, I do wish it was a little bigger. I could sell it and upgrade.

@PurplePeony: yeah I hear the upright ones have cons too. Thanks for weighing in! The 5 cu ft versus the 7 cu ft is only a $20 difference in price...so maybe the larger makes more sense.

@Bao: we have a 7 cu ft and it's a good size for us. The footprint isn't actually much bigger than a 5 cu ft, and we wanted that extra bit of space. We didn't need a bigger one, though, because then we'd have risked stocking it with stuff that would get forgotten about and sit there for years. The only downside so far is that I find it difficult to keep organized -- I bought some bins but unfortunately they're not doing the trick -- but I think that's just a general problem for chest freezers.

We are getting a deep freezer today but debating between the 5 and 7 cubic foot ones. Or maybe we should be debating different sizes? These are both under $180 which is in our budget. We looked at them at the store but of course they were empty so it's hard to judge how much would actually fit in them.

If you have an extra freezer how large is it? Does it fit a lot? Do you wish it was smaller or larger?
