We have had one for years and the kids use it every single day. I'm surprised at how much they use it, even in the winter when it's pretty much buried in snow

My kids are climbers. They got one for xmas but we are moving so we will set it up then and my dd is SO excited. I know it'll get used probably daily. Even if just a place to sit for awhile.

I think it depends on how many kids you have, and how often you prioritize being in the yard. We only have a swingset, and it gets used on the weekends. Sadly I am not good at getting them out there on weekdays. My older DS in in prek and they do outdoor time all day after 3:15 so I don't feel like I have to, because he's usually been outside for an hour when I pick him up. Plus the swingset isn't as big as the ones at the park, so if we're all home and have the time I am likely to take them to the park. The swingset does come in handy when we want to do yard work though. I specifically decided not to get a bigger playset because a) I didn't want to spend the money/have to save for it and b) I think it can discourage play with other kids because there isn't a reason to leave your own yard...

We have an older version of this with an extra, smaller slide - https://www.littletikes.com/item/612398/clubhouse-swingset/1.html

I bought it used pretty cheaply, for maybe $100? DS likes to use it, but it doesn't really hold his attention for a long time. And he's unable to do the swings by himself. He's only 3 though, so as he gets older it might hold his attention more. I also plan to get him a glider swing this year so he can climb into it himself.

While I'd love for him to have a super awesome wooden play set, I'm not really convinced we'd get our money's worth out of it. It seems like there's only a few years where kids are really into that stuff. We have neighbors next to us that have triplet boys. They have what used to be a really nice playset but they took it apart before we moved in when the kids were 9. So those kids were all completely over the swingset before 9 years old. And my 3 year old can only just now sort of use one of those by himself. So their maximum use is from maybe 4-8 years old?

We installed a simple wooden one the summer we moved in, so 4 years ago now. (2 swings, a tower, a slide and a single flip bar thing) and it gets a ton of use. My son uses it rather non traditionally, though, like launching cars off the slide.

Right now we just have plastic everything for my 2 year old and she can play outside all day long if she could. So I think we're thinking of investing in a playset next summer and get at least 4-5 years of use with both girls.

We are buying a nice wooden set for our girls and my husband had the same issues yours does at first.
Right now we have just a swing set and a plastic outdoor house and play on them every day. I had a nice swing set with a fort growing up and I played on it until I moved to college, so I've always wanted my girls to have a nice outdoor place to play/hangout.

He plays with it, but oddly he can independent play with it the least of any of his outdoor toys. He's kind of a free outdoor spirit though and prefers just to roam and look for bugs. It might also be age some (2.5 yo) as the next door neighbor (5) adores it.

Ultimately he uses it a lot but I'm always having to play with him on it. Push him on the swing, watch him do a flip on the bars, etc.

We've had it for almost a year.

We've had ours for a week - we got it because my son always wants to go to the park after daycare and we never have time because I have to start dinner, so this way he can just go out in the yard. So far it's been played with every day. I also have friends who have had theirs for several years and their kids still use it all the time.

I think how much use it gets depends on 1) how much you're home, 2) your weather, 3) the proximity of neighborhood children, and 4) your child's temperament. A playset near us gets nearly zero use because the children are in school/aftercare/extracurricular activities all day and were in daycare before that. There are tons of other children around who play in their yards with other toys/ride bikes, so the children with the playset usually want to go play with them. It seems like a swing set/slide/tower that is also appropriate for toddlers isn't as appealing once you hit school age. I guess there are ones that might also appeal to older children, but the one I'm talking about was probably $1k-2k, so it wasn't exactly cheap.

I'd look into those modular ones if you think it will be used and you're home enough without built-in friends to make it worthwhile. And maybe a swing in a tree. Tire swings have a longer lifespan, I think.

We just have an older regular swing set with a slide attached (so not as fun as those big wooden ones) and my 3 year old plays on it every time we are in the backyard. We visited friends with a nice wooden one and he played on it for hours with their kids. And their oldest is 7 and still uses it!

We recently moved to a house with a big backyard, and I've been talking to DH about buying a nice wooden playset for our two boys. I want one with a slide, swings and a fort area. They can be expensive, so I know it's an investment. DH says he isn't sure we should buy one, because he thinks it's something people buy and then their kids never end up playing with it. Then it just sits in the yard taking up space. Which one of us is right? Do kids generally enjoy playsets or are they a waste of space?
