Yeah during surgery. My husband saw the big bucket of fluid and blood. Surprisingly he didn't freak out.

I remember asking my OBGYN this exact question as I was also curious. She said it's one of the most asked questions. :)

@Dandelion: interesting! ...One of those things I didn't know. I don't remember hearing a vacuum! Or much of anything, other than people talking.

I saw an article within the last few days of a baby en caul being born via c-section, so my guess is that it varies!

like @Dandelion: it is after the first incision and before the baby comes out, so really really early in the surgery. With my last c-section they "broke" (cut?) my water and the baby got sucked back into me! I had nurses jumping on my upper torso to get him back out again. I, apparently, had a lot of amniotic fluid :)

During the process of the c section there's a vacuum sucking up all the fluids including the water. DH said that all he could see was the bucket-like thing on the other end collecting the grossness the vacuum brought up. He said he tried to ignore it lol.

They cut your skin, then your uterus, and then the bag of water.

I've also been wondering. I had a c-section and my water never broke beforehand nor did I lose my mucous plug...if I had to guess I'd say they break your water once they do the incision, then sweep the mucous plug out with the placenta?

I had a scheduled c-section and I have no idea, haha sorry. My OB was very good about verbally walking us through every step of the c-section but I don't remember her mentioning that so I'm guessing they don't (??) or it's just a part of everything else.

Mine was broken to start my induction. I'll probably have a repeat C next time and I'm wondering when does your bag of waters get broken if it's scheduled? Does it at all?

Probably a dumb question but I'm curious. Lol
