We don't keep many toys in DD's room. She has some blocks, a bin of stuffed animals, and lots of books, but that's about it. As she gets older I'm sure we'll keep more in there (she's 2 1/2), but for now I like that she associates the room mostly with sleep.

Pretty much everything is in the playroom. The kids have books and a few stuffed animals in their rooms, and that's about it. DS also has a small room next to his bedroom that we have a few toys in-small trampoline, cars, stuffed animals....but we rarely use that space either.

We have a dedicated playroom upstairs and most of the toys live there. We do have some toys in the family room downstairs (smaller things that live in cabinets). We only keep stuffed animals (including doll cribs) and books in their rooms.

@PinkElephant: our play room is in the basement, and bedrooms on the main level. Right now we have a small (ish) collapsible tote that fits in one of the closets on the main level. I let DS (2.5) pick out what toys from the playroom to bring upstairs with him. We rotate it out for new toys every 4 weeks or so. That way most of the toys are downstairs, but we have a reasonable amount on the main level for him to play with, too!

Most of DS's toys are in the playroom. In his bedroom, he has books, his stuffed animals, and a few small toys in a basket.

Now that they are sharing a room just books and a few stuffed animals

books, stuffed animals/doll babies, dress up clothes, play vanity, table and chairs, a couple of the peg board puzzles....
anything I wouldn't care if she played with independently if she woke up early

downstairs - has the bulk of her toys, plus the stuff she would need parental help with (arts and crafts) those a put up high and she needs to ask to play them.

FYI she turned three in sept

We don't have a separate playroom but her "yes space" is in our living room, and all of her toys are in there. No toys are in her bedroom. Unless you count the stuffed animals she sleeps with, which sometimes get carried downstairs with her.

Pretty much all their toys are in the playroom, and all books (minus a few) are in the bedrooms.

DS1 does have a few small boxes of toys in his bookshelf. There's no rhyme or reason as to why certain ones are there, I just picked and put them there.

In our old apartment we had a large room that we used as my office/guest room/play room. All of the toys went there. My son only had his teddy and some books in his room. We also moved before he turned 3, so we might have put some toys in his room had we stayed in that apartment. I am a neat freak so I personally liked having all the toys in one place and being able to shut the door.

@ShootingStar: Same for us. The bedroom is for naptime and bedtime only. He has books and his favorite stuffed animals and that's all.

We do have a TV room downstairs where we keep toys we supervise or help him with, such as playdough, Magnatiles, Lite Brite and coloring supplies. Everything else goes in the playroom upstairs.

A few random and quiet toys I don't mind them using during nap/quiet time stay in their rooms. The rest are in the playroom. There are two shelves of books in the playroom, but most of their books are in their own rooms where they have little reading nooks and rockers.

We just did DD"s big girl room; I just randomly chose some books to keep up there (esp bed time books), and then I'll keep a basket of stuffed animals up there but otherwise everything stays downstairs.

We only have books in the bedroom. Plus whatever stuffed animals he takes to bed. His room is just for sleeping, we don't spend any time in there when he's awake.

I think if you have enough storage in the playroom and the expectation that all toys live there, you won't have as much of a problem. Although we also don't let DS go up and down the stairs by himself, so if he were to try and take a toy up there we could just tell him to put it back.

Nearly all toys are in the playroom. He has a small bookshelf with books to choose from for bedtime story time and a few stuffed animals in his room, but that's it. He never really plays in his bedroom. Toys stay downstairs in the playroom, and sometimes bleed out into the living room.

My son's room is separate from the playroom. He does have some toys in his bedroom, but it is mostly the space where he does his drawing.

He does have magnatiles and some cars in his room. Books are in the living room as well as bedroom.

Just as the title asks - if you have a designated playroom (so plenty of space for toys), what toys, if any, stay in your LOs bedrooms? How about books?

Trying to figure out what to do in our new house. Part of me wants to say no toys upstairs, but I feel like some things - maybe doll cribs, or the oldest's toys with very small parts, or special stuffed animals - might stay in their rooms.

I desperately want to avoid the constant dragging of toys between levels of the home we have happening at the moment.
