For me, it was just picking one from my insurance list and reading their bio on their strategies or method. Also, location and office hours was important for me. I wanted to make sure they had weekend or late night hours so I could see them after work. If I like them, set up an appt to see them. Then meeting them. Sometimes things just click, sometimes they'll say something in session #5 that just rubs you the wrong way. Sometimes you can see past it, but sometimes you can't. That's when I would try someone else. You want to make sure you feel comfortable sharing everything with them.

Ours was recommended by friends. Turns out there are 5 or 6 people where I work who use the same one. It was a great recommendation.

@BabyBoecksMom: Maybe there is some kind of therapy referral service in your area? I know of this one in seattle:
http://www.therapyreferral.org

I asked my ND to recommend one, and saw someone I ended up recommended to many friends. If you can think of any friends you feel comfortable talking with about it, definitely ask!

@IRunForFun: This is how I did it, too. My insurance is taken by nearly everyone so I did an online search which lead me to my therapist.

Do you go to church? Pastors often have a few that they can recommend.

I searched online, basically. I looked at doctors in my network, focused on the specialty I was looking for, and then read reviews. I also talked to more than one on the phone and chose the one I felt I connected best with. I've been happy with my choice.

My insurance carrier helped me narrow down therapists that were convenient. Then, I visited their websites and read reviews online. I ended up calling one and spoke to him over the phone before my actual session. Immediately he validated my feelings and spoke with authority- both things I liked. I had a back up one that I also reached out to as well, but I was distracted by his speaking voice.

My insurance website is where I started - wanted to make sure it was covered. From there I spoke with 3 different therapists on the phone to get a feel for them and then chose one.

@MaryM: yes and then I googled them!

My insurance website was really helpful. It listed people and included what their specialties were. When I found a shorter list of who might work for me, I googled them to see if they'd published articles or done work in the community, etc.

I would like to start seeing a therapist just for my own well being and to help me deal with the challenges of being a busy, high strung mom, but I have no idea where to start. I know I could go through my insurance for a list, but I don't think that will necessarily give me the match that I need. I also feel weird asking friends for advice... because I don't know anyone who goes to a therapist.

How did you find yours?
