My BFF is doing that right now. Her little guy was 6ish months old when they bought the house and they've made it work. There was a short time where the didn't have a proper kitchen and were washing their dishes in the bathroom and using a barbeque to cook all their meals. Anything is doable, its all a matter of what you want to put into it.

For DH and I, that would NEVER work, we would for real end up divorced. We'd bicker over stupid stuff and have different timelines for everything. We hired a painter to paint our bathroom not because we can't paint, but because he is a perfectionist and I'm in a hurry for everything. It was worth the $200 to save us the fight! lol! I say know your limits and be realistic about what will work for yout both.

It depends on what type of renovations are needed, but ideally I would rather pay more for a house that doesnt need renovations while my kids are small

No. Not that it's not doable, I just wouldn't want to do it. Too much of a hassle to screw with nap time for that long of a period, have all of those loud noises around all the time. I think I'd move into a place that needs some work, but not a ton of work. I just don't have time to do a ton of work with LO around, and I'd rather have DH spend his time with us than working on the house.

So you would be doing the renovations while you are all living there? I guess it would depend on what needed doing-- if you wouldn't be able to use the living room or upstairs bathroom or something, sure, but if it meant you had no bathroom to use, or no kitchen for a long time (a week or longer?) I would prefer to do the renovations before moving in. But that's the same with or without kids, really. And I would want to make sure you and LO had a place to play and hang out that wouldn't be dusty-- so if you are renovating downstairs, there is an upstairs bedroom to be in, or vice versa.

We live in a home built in the 60s that needs a lot of work, but it's safe and liveable for the most part (the back deck is the only safety concern, but we simply won't let her play out there). We did a lot of projects before LO was born, but now we have no time to work on anything!

Yeah, probably. We're moving home to our house we inherited from my FIL and it needs a LOT of work. C will be 2.

If the house is safe to live in and all lead paint has been removed, would you live in and renovate a home built in the 1900's if you have a child under 3?
