@Foodnerd81: thanks for the tip! I watched some of that webinar last night--I learned that I probably shouldn't be dream feeding anymore a few hours after she goes to bed!

C is down to 2 naps a day. His first one is at 10 am and goes til 12. His second one is at 4 and goes til 5. If we are still out at 4, he always falls asleep in the car. Never a solid nap though, and he's always tired by 7 and ready for bed if we were out.

@illumina: whoa! that's crazy. but yeah, I had a playdate the other week and one mom brought her newborn, who just drifted quietly to sleep on his own amidst the chaos. That has never happened with my LO in all his days :silly:

@illumina: c goes back and forth between 2 and 3 naps now at 6 months. Some days she takes a 2+ hour nap in the am and just a 1 hour afternoon one and she's fine. The trick is timing it so there isn't a big chunk if time before bed then.

Isis has a webinar on sleep age 5-9 months that is still avilable on their site that was helpful. She talks about not staying in the newborn rut, which I realized I was. Worth watching if you get a chance.

@scg00387: OK let's hope S drops it soon! Actually come to think of it, there have been a couple of days recently when she didn't take her first nap until late and just took 2 long naps. Hmm. Oh, I already invite friends over here because it's much easier. Their babies, the same age, don't seem to need to nap anywhere near as much. My friend was here last week and I thought her baby looked a little tired, you know like just gazing into the distance, and she was like "yeah, she hasn't napped today" this was at 1pm!! ugh.

@illumina: mine did at 6 months but he's always been one to drop sleep early :) in summer it will be easier to just get out! By that age you can invite others over for play dates too.

If she didn't sleep in her crib i'd have her nap in the car or in the Ergo. Unfortunately the max she will sleep in either place is 1 hour.

LO barely naps well in his crib, let alone anywhere else. we're pretty much home for naps. with 2 naps it's not that bad, but when he was regularly taking 3+ naps, it was rough because i often felt like we couldn't do anything. if we were feeling adventurous we'd run out for an hour to the mall and come back home, but that's about it.

@illumina: I don't think it's really fair to ask a baby to sleep in their crib... except when I want to leave  My son was the exact same way, has never napped in his stroller/Boba, and doesn't sleep in the carseat well or often. So, we are home for naps. It got a lot easier once he went to 2 naps and we had a nice chunk of time to leave the house, and even easier now that he is on one nap.

@Foodnerd81: I know what you mean on that last point. I have got her to go 3hrs before with keeping her occupied, but by then it is almost impossible to get her to nap without a fair bit of crying :( Usually it involves an extended car ride! ;)

With C it depends sometimes she willfallasleep in the stroller or car seat and have a good nap, sometimes (rarely) she will nap being held, and we have brought the whole pack and play with us if we are going to be somewhere for a few hours. The biggest thing right now is that we can stretch that awake time if we just keep entertaining her but that's pretty recent.

I'm pretty sure you know what a crappy sleeper C was, so I'm happy to report she has gotten much more adaptable!

My son only really napped in his crib, there was no such thing as sleeping well in the car or stroller, even during scheduled nap time. He just needed the environment and the ritual. Everything else was a cue that we were out and about.

Basically, it got better when we got to two naps. I would usually do something in between the first and second naps, which was just enough time.

ILs and my parents both have cribs at their places. Otherwise it's carseat naps. DS is on two naps at 14 months and wants/needs them. He's usually good about transfers tho.

What do you do when you are out?

S has always had pretty high sleep needs. She takes 3 solid 1-2hr naps per day and can stay awake for around 1.5-2hrs between them. She takes almost all of her naps in her crib unless we're at my parent's house where she has a travel cot set up, or the car seat if the journey is longer than half an hour. I can at a push get her to nap for short periods (15-20mins) on my shoulder or in the ergo if we're out. But then she wakes up more cranky than before!

We have tried a few times to get her to nap in her pram, reclined flat, she just cries...we've tried taking her somewhere in the car seat...nope, still cries.

So I'm just wondering what other people do. It feels like we're really confined to the house at the moment because after 2hrs of awake time (which isn't long enough to get her fed, changed, ready to go out and actually do much!) she melts down and we spend the rest of our time trying to calm her or get her to sleep on us. Should we keep trying to get her to nap when we're out so we can still go places or should we just stay in as much as we can and stick to her schedule? Did anyone start off with a baby like this that you trained to nap on the go?
