@jape14: I like this color! I want something that is a medium brown, but not too dark. Our kitchen is going to have white cabinets, so I think a medium brown floor would contrast better than the current Golden Oak.

@Mrs. Goose: @JennyPenny: @snowjewelz: @petitenoisette: This is one of the reasons I don't want to go too dark on my hardwoods. I've heard that the dark color shows dirt and hair, and with two kids and three pets, I need something that will be easy to keep looking nice.

The wood is golden oak, so when we had it refinished, we tested a ton of stains to make sure we didn't end up with something orange. Its medium brown and I love it. No pets, though and a lot of it is covered with area rugs and 4 years later, it's still almost perfect.

Similar story as @peachykeen: our were a yellow oak and we refinished them to be a warm medium brown close to @jape14: they are great. Hide dirt really well, sometime too well.

Ours are pretty much exactly like @jape14: - refinished just before we bought the house - and I think it's the perfect color for us. Our last house had sightly lighter/yellower and it didn't look as nice.

@808love: I love your floors! Are they an unusual type of wood? The grain looks different than what I usually see.

I have a medium finish with a hint of red in the finish. The house came with them. Most of the older houses (1950s and older) in my area were built with floors that look exactly like these, so that is why the previous owner chose this color.

Ours looks different in the shade or in the light. It is actually medium dark. I like it. Hides dirt.

I'm not sure what it's called, it's kinda light. In a few years I'd like to replace the awful Berber carpet in our living room with hardwood and refinish everything to a darker color. Not super dark, but something more updated.

@jape14: we have this too, almost identical. Ours is maybe a shade lighter. I actually really like it the more I've lived with it (we rent). It matches all of our decor, doesn't show dirt (we have two cats, a toddler, and no entryway so we track a ton of dirt in). It's not too traditional but also can go modern and matches a lot of different wood toned furniture we have

We have ash, nice and light, and I love it we will do light floors in our new house too. The only issue is the sunburn. Where we have a rug in the living room and the sun hits it, the wood is massively discolored. We will have to refinish it before we sell. Not all stains will sunburn, be sure you ask.

Ours is espresso (so very dark) and I read all about how easily it looked dirty before we put it in and didn't listen. I should have listened. Like @JennyPenny our dog has also wrecked a lot of it. Of course it looks amazing when it's freshly cleaned but it's not worth it.

@JennyPenny: ours are a similar color.

Ours are so dark because our house is over 100 years old and some of the floors were stained near the windows (unfinished). We had dark at our old house and liked it too

Our floors are Minwax Dark Walnut, which actually isn't that dark of a stain. It's a medium true brown and we love it! Picture for reference:

We have a pretty dark stain. I love it, but yes, all smudges/dirt show and I go crazy mopping the floor all the time. But I still love the look of it... If I had to choose again I think I'd still go with it.

I'd guess ours is a dark walnut? It's very dark. But it matches our circa 1973 exposed beams and trim

It's really nice hardwood, and we don't have pets so we don't end up with a lot of dirt that shows. But it also shows scratches pretty easily and I'm not sure when it was last waxed....

I grew up with more a midrange cherry color. I liked it on the floors where it was super natural and really old (like, there were spaces between the boards. It was amazing!)

I think I prefer darker more than lighter overall though

(guessed color names based on http://iappfind.com/images/_fullsize/f/frantic-hardwood-stain-colors-and-hardwood-stain-colors-along-with-interior-decor-home_hardwood-floor-colors.jpg)

I have super dark hardwoods and am not a huge fan for the reasons @Mrs. Goose mentioned. It just shows all the dirt. Our dog has wrecked it as well and so we will refinish at some point. When we do I'm going with something like this. I think it is still sophisticated but maybe more timeless and hopefully will show less dirt. Friends of ours have something similar and I think it looks great.

We have hardwood in two rooms and it is a bit lighter than golden oak. I just googled it to see how close to ours it is. I actually love the light colour. It's very neutral I feel and goes with anything and one of the main reasons I like it is that it doesn't show dirt the way dark floors do. In our old house we had espresso brown fake hardwood and I hated it because it always looked dirty two seconds after it had been cleaned whether it was from moisture spots, pet hair, or crumbs. We have very dark brown furniture in one of our hardwood rooms and also in our kitchen which is beside one of the hardwood rooms. I think it may be personal preference of what you like to be honest when it comes to choosing. Our house is only 7 years old and I originally thought the floor was sort of dated, but I quickly changed my tune.

If you have hardwood floors, what color is your stain? Do you like it or wish you had something else? We are refinishing the hardwood floors in our house, and we have the option to go with a different stain. Currently, we have Golden Oak, which is a lighter, neutral color. My husband and I both want something that looks timeless and goes with our transitional decor. There are so many choices! We might end up staying with our current color or only going a shade or two darker.
