My step sister is a colorist and she recommends Loreal because their formula is similar is to the Loreal brand for professional stylists. I dye my hair at home every 6-7 weeks and just focus on the roots. I've gotten good at doing it at home over the years. Tips include vaseline along the hairline, protecting the surfaces you are touching, nail polish remover to get anything leftover cleaned up, and using the same wrecked towel and shirt each time to prevent extenuating the messes. </p> <p>I did lighten up my hair at a salon but that's not in the budget right now and DH likes my hair dark. It's hard to be so grey with dark hair! Used to do it at home using Garnier which worked well for dark hair. I sucked at it and eventually my hair was a spotty brassy mess. So I've been going to the salon ever since. I stretch it to every 7-8 weeks rather than the standard 6 weeks which prob saves about one visit a year. You're right, it is expensive and definitely a big drain on the budget. But hair is such a big part of a woman's physical appearance. They really started coming in after LO was born. I dont dye them, I think they help me look older at work :) Also Kate Middleton doesnt dye hers and shes a princess!</p> <p>If you are looking to dye, I would recommend looking into how to mix salon quality hair dye yourself, has to be enough how to's on the internet, then picking up hair dye and the developer from Sallys or another retail beauty store. I can't stand looking at them anymore though.
