If someone made that comment to me, I would ask what exactly is so terrible about having a girl. Girls are not un-relatable aliens, and boys are not guaranteed to be football-toting jocks. I was actually much closer to my dad than my mom growing up, and I always hated Barbies and liked math. It's really awful to make a child feel that her parents are disappointed in her gender.</p> <p>Sorry, but this sort of thing really makes me see red, especially as an educated woman who works in a male-dominated field. Our society really needs to move past this sort of regressive thinking. He was only open to one name and for a girl they just changed the spelling so I grew up so embarrassed with my masculine name especially since there were two boys in my class with the same name. My sisters took gymnastics and dance and my parents put me in basketball and softball.
