The sitting room wasn't really formal, but it was for quiet activities like reading, while the family room is where we had our TV, video games, toys, ectect. Our kitchen table is the only place to dine in our house, and I like it that way. The living room is the first room you come into when you enter the house. So it feels like a transition room, yet, it's also a room that is nice to spend time in when you don't want the distraction of the TV. So I consider it a room that's nice to use when people just want to talk, or when I flip through magazines or read. We use the living room to watch tv and hang out when we're cooking, and I use it in the morning while I'm getting ready. When we're just watching tv though we go downstairs. Mostly the dog hangs out in the living room all day, sleeping on the couch and looking out the big picture window. Sell the living room furniture and make the old dining room a (small) play area. Currently it's used for storage. The mail is on the sofa table and DH's motorcycle helmet and gloves are on the couch. We keep our 2 dogs in the office, which is right off our family room. We still need to furnish our dining room, we have furniture in our Living Room, it's just not what I want. We turned 1/2 our basement into LOs playroom and the other 1/2 is DHs playroom (aka- media room). The formal dining room might become a play room, depending on the layout/space of the house.
