We have no family nearby and until Sunday when I had DS2, I always had a sitter come for 3 hours between breakfast and lunch to watch DS while I rested in the other room because I was pregnant and exhausted. I'm going to have both boys by myself when DS2 is 1 month old for just one day bc my sitter won't be around and DH will be gone for like 12 hours and I'm honestly already terrified.

DH is going to be out of town for 5 nights next month. I decided to fly home to see my mom instead of solo parenting.

I dont have family close, but have friends near by who are also often solo parenting on the weekends or willing to have us over for a bit. It helps so much to have other grown ups around to break up the days.

Usually just stay home. Try to find someone to hang out with. Very common for people here to be on shift, so I can find a friend who's husband is also working and hang out with her.

Starting this summer twice out of every 5 weeks DH will work a weekend (one nights one days) so we will get used to it. I might go visit family sometimes, but te a bit over 3 hours and that seems far when I'll have a 2.5 year old and a baby.

I would probably drive to my parents house. 1 hr away. They're awesome! Unless I had something specific to do that was fun and worth staying for. And in that case, I might have my parents come up haha.

I solo parent every other weekend. We have family in town, so we split it up. Sometimes we take it easy and hang out at home, play, maybe go for a walk or something. Sometimes we just run errands. Sometimes we do things with friends or family. When my husband works weekends, he usually gets home just in time for bedtime, so I usually don't stay anywhere overnight.

Doesn't happen very often but the times that DH is away or working around the clock, I usually go stay with my mom. Not that it makes it any easier because her house is not really kid proof so I have to be on top of them all the time, but it's nice to be around someone else.

I wish family was closer, but they're 5-6 hrs away :( when DH is on call or working shifts all weekend, I haul the kids to the gym for 2 hrs each day and usually throw in a Target/Costco trip in there. It sucks living far from family during med school and residency. I'm going to really be pissed if we don't move back home when he's all done. 1.5 hrs away is DEFINITELY do-able for a weekend trip!

My husband travels for 2-3 weeks at a time,,3-4x a year. I try to take the weekends for something fun. We are in the middle of a three week run, so this weekend we packed up and headed to a resort. Swimming, room service, and cable tv, FTW!

Sort of 50/50. Sometimes I visit my fam or have them come stay with me (plane ride away).

But since I still only have one LO it's manageable and if I'm being honest - I love that when he goes to bed I'm TRULY alone for a few hours. I love my husband but I also really love alone time. So even nights he has a work event or happy hour I relish that time!

If I had family that close, we would definitely make at least a day-trip. Because of the boards prep, I'd be inclined to get out of town even more -- I generally think it's more frustrating when DH is there but not really "there" than if he is just gone!

My family is s little too far to drive for a weekend so I would stay home, but see if anyone wanted to come stay with me (two sisters are now 2 and 3 hours away). It's much easier for them to come to me and the two kids. Otherwise we would pretty much treat it like a weekday and try to stick to schedules and take it easy. Driving the 5 hours to my parents house alone with a toddler and baby is too much for me to handle.

I don't drive, so we stay home but I try to get us out of the house at least once to break up the time. We'll hit up a playground or museum, sometimes we do a playdate, and often my dad will come over on one of the days and have lunch with us.

We don't have family close by so that isn't really an option for us. I have a few friends who have spouses that work Saturdays so I try to make plans with them. We don't usually go out after nap (except to the park or foot walks) so I sometimes will go somewhere in the evening or we do something fun but not stressful for dinner.

My IL's are nearby so for this last 3 day solo, I spent time at their house, but it was just kind of coincidence as I was helping to watch my nephew at the grandparents' house. I was also able to take LO to go see her dad for an hour on 2 of the 3 days, so we fit that in around some errands in the area.

@Silva: yeah it's technically "call" but he is also getting ready for the final round of his boards (YES!) so i feel like us just getting out of they frey would be good for everyone! I work 3-4 days a week so if we do more of the same on the weekend it just sort of all blends together so I like doing different stuff too!

I have done many of these during my husbands residency. More often than not we go stay with my parents, who live about an hour away. If we aren't doing that I try to plan a fun activity (museum, farm, hike) for Saturday and then do grocery shopping and out for lunch on Sunday.

I only work two days a week, so I am home alone with my daughter a lot. But on the weekends it's nice to have help and company. My parents enjoy us visiting and I get a nice break!

We don't really have anywhere to go, family is all 6+ hour flights away so not worth doing for a weekend. We just try to keep busy by going to the zoo, children's museum, out to breakfast or lunch, playdates, etc. It's tough on me but there's no alternative.

When DH went away for a weekend when DS #1 was a little under two years old, we visited my parents. That weekend happened to be when he got his first ear infection. I recently solo'ed for about a day and a half with both kids. We stayed home and stuck to schedule.

If you have to solo parent for a weekend (or weekends in general) do you stick around? Or do you go visit family, etc?

I have to solo parent for a full weekend at least once a month when my husband is on call. Sometimes we stick close to home, but then I get annoyed that he's not around to help me! Occasionally we'll drive to my parents (1.5 hours away) for those weekends so I have company and an extra hand with the kids.

We have one of those weekends coming up and I'm debating what to do.

What do you do when you have to solo parent all weekend?
