We have a outdoor gun range about a mile from the house, so we're pretty used to hearing gunshots. But, if we were away from the house and I heard it, I know I should get low, but I would probably freeze in place out of fear..

We don't do anything. We live about 1/2 mile from a turkey shoot, so every Friday & Saturday night we hear gunshots for about 3-4 hours. Any other time? We don't even hesitate. Guns are such a big part of life here that I don't pay attention to them.

I'd probably think it's a car backfiring or fireworks going off! Unless I was inside a mall or some big building where those sounds wouldn't really be heard, my mind just wouldn't assume gun! I've lived such a sheltered life...

I would probably jump and turn to see what it is! I've never heard a gun shot IRL before and I would probably not automatically assume it's a gun and want to know what it was. Then once I figured out it was a gun I would run!

We live in TX in the burbs, not too far from fields, lakes and a state park...so when I hear a gunshot, I just figure there are bored rednecks nearby and carry on w/business. If I were at my parents house in the city I don't think I'd do anything, either--I've never heard a gunshot and actually been scared! Maybe it's a non-inner city Texas thing.

We used to hear them all the time when we lived in Philly, but we were always indoors. We'd still get down below the windows, though, especially if it sounded close, and call 911.

If I were outside, I assume I would do the same, and cover DS with my body.

There's so much hunting around here that if I'm outside I rarely think anything of it. If I were in a building though, I'd drop to the floor and army crawl to the nearest place to hide.

Ha! I'd look around wondering what on earth that was. It would be so unexpected that I'm sure I'd just act stunned.

I heard them alot growing up, I'd always assume it was someone hunting since we lived out in the middle of nowhere.

If it was obviously not hunting-related, I'd run to the nearest obstruction (wall, building, car, etc.) and try to figure out the safest place to go.

I've always heard its hard to hit a moving target, so my first instinct would be to run.

My instinct would be to cover LO if she were with me. Get as low down as possible and try and scoot to a phone, with her under me...somehow. If I were alone, I would drop down, and do the same thing by trying to get to a phone. Maybe I would just hide too, depending on where I was or the specifics of the situation.

I read somewhere that the best thing you can do is hit the ground. A lot of people start running, and it's a lot easier to hit someone upright than it is to hit them if they are on the ground.

So given that, I would hit the ground and then belly crawl as fast as possible to to cover (behind a car?) and call 911. That said, if the kids were with me in a stroller, I would just break all the rules and push that sucker as fast as I could out of there.

If you heard a gunshot nearby, what is the first thing you would do?
