@Meridian: Yeah I've read that some babies just aren't ready when you ST and if you try the same thing weeks later it magically just works! I hope it will work or you later on!

I held, wore, or pushed LO for all her naps until we daytime weaned at 15 months. There were several (5-6) attempts at nap training attempts in there but I never got it to work. Lo also went to three different daycares during that period and none of them got her to nap in a crib either. On the positive side LO has napped like a dream from 15 months to now at 25 months.

Around 3 mo I think she took all of her naps in the crib. I started around 2 mo with the goal of just one nap per day (the first one) would be a try in the crib. That way if it was a disaster she could catch up. Once we got that down (and there were a lot of failed naps in that month) we went from there. We didn't do CIO and I camped out until she was asleep. Basically I would let her mildly fuss but soothe if she was upset. No science to it but she eventually learned to fall asleep on her own and now naptime and bedtime are soooo easy. I started around 2 mo in prep for going back to work so other caregivers weren't holding her for naps. She was also gettig too interactive for sleeping in the Moby and I was getting stuck in her nursery. We didn't have a real plan but mostly followed her lead developmentally with the goal of crib napping.

I held one or both of my kids for most naps once the 4 month sleep regression hit up until 7.5 months old. I was spending all day long in the nursery trying to get them to sleep, then trying to keep one asleep, then the other. (I have twins) I did not have time to shower or do anything productive around the house. Honestly, it was starting to make me feel depressed. I went cold turkey the day my husband returned to work after 3 weeks off work at Christmas. I did the nap routine, put them in their cribs, and left the room. Blake screamed for 35 minutes, then fell asleep for 15 and woke up screaming again. Alice fell asleep quicker but not by much. I felt like a terrible mom and human being for making them cry like that. (When we did CIO for bedtime they cried 15 min tops) But when I put them down for their second nap they cried for 15 minutes and were done and slept for 1.5 hrs. The next day they only cried for a couple minutes and started sleeping for at least 1 hr. Since training I actually rarely make them cry at naps. I usually put them both to sleep nursing then put them down, but that's what I had to do to get it to work at first. They were chronically overtired from awful naps and terrible night sleep, so I had to do something drastic. They are really good nappers now and it's very nice to have some time to myself during the day now! It made me feel like a human again!

@snowjewelz: There are a *lot* of sleep training methods--they aren't all "put the baby in the crib and let them scream for hours".

The pick-up/put down method I mentioned before is different. It didn't work for night time sleep for us, but it worked like a charm for naps. I did the pick up/put downs to extend naps as well.

@snowjewelz: Yea, I always hold to extend the afternoon naps because the 20 - 30 mins isn't enough. His fussing will turn into full blown crying and then I can't calm him down back to sleep, so I always intervene. Ugh.

As for sleep training, it didn't work for us, I was so traumatized because we stuck with it for 12 nights, and he was still crying and crying at bedtime. The books said babies won't cry for more than 2 hours, but mine would cry for 3 hours!!

@Anagram: wow that's a great success story! I need to be stricter to and start letting mine figure it out on her own...

@Meridian: DD is almost 4 mo and we hold her for ~10 min then put down. It wouldn't be so bad if she doesn't always stay down! She would do another 20-30 min and then wake up and when we need to extend her nap we will hold her.

And I'm sorry about the sleep-training! We're planning to start sometime in April and I'm scared it won't work either and we'll just be left with sleepless nights and lots of tears :crying:

I held her for a lot of her naps until she was 3.5 months old---then I did some light nap training. At that point, I got strict with myself about starting a nap routine and sticking to it. Before, I would always have her falling asleep with some kind of motion (baby carrier, stroller, bouncer) or being held and I stopped that.

I did the pick up/put down method for a while, and I would let her fuss a bit in her crib, as long as it didn't turn to full on scream cries (sometimes she would fuss for 10-15 minutes and I would force myself to do something like clean the kitchen counters).

Anyway, it worked and then she started talking all her naps in the crib and it was so FREEING.

How and when did you stop?? LO is 5.5 months and I hold him for a good chunk of his naps. If you did this too, did it naturally stop?? Or do I need to nap train? We tried to sleep train for nights at 4.5 months and it was terrible (12 days and didn't really work).

1) Morning nap: this one is typically good and he can nap in his crib for 2 - 3 hours!

2) Early afternoon nap: He'll sleep in his crib for 30 mins and then will fuss/cry and I'll need to hold him for another 30 - 45 mins

3) Late afternoon nap: He'll sleep in his crib for 20 mins and then will fuss/cry and I'll need to hold him for another 30 - 45 mins
