I know! It was a little piece. :) Her doctor cut a little piece off, and she put it under her tongue. The oxytocin and other hormones get into the bloodstream quickly (like anything taken sublingually), and cause the uterus to clamp down, thus stopping the hemorrhage. </p> <p>She was comfortable trying it because she was in a hospital setting, and there were emergency protocols in place. </p> <p>Her first two births had dramatic bleeding afterwards, and this one didn't. She ended up putting a piece of placenta under her tongue for her 3rd baby. It helped, dramatically. Obviously, that's not for everyone (not even her, but her doc recommended it). </p> <p>As a birth photographer, I've seen 2 of my clients who had previous hemorrhages go through birth #2 without. My labor with DD was long and hard and included 4 hours of pushing. Once she and the placenta were out, my body was just *done* - so my ute had zero energy left to contract enough to stop the bleeding.
