My mom has a house that only some rooms get used (like guest rooms and bathrooms) so her cleaning people leave an awesome checklist that says which rooms get cleaned every time, and the extra tasks they did this time and what they will do next time. I think sometimes she asks they do the whole house if we are coming to visit or just left.

@periwinklebee: they make 6 foot long swiffer dusters! I use one plus a step stool and can reach almost any dustable surface in my house, which has lots of two-story rooms/vaulted ceilings with high windows. It’s taller than the standard one, so read packages carefully. It’s a lifesaver

@LadyDi: Thank you! Having them get confused is also definitely a concern. We use a private person, but she has a group of people that work for her...

@misolee: good point on lifting up the rugs. Though I wonder if our person is that thorough... she definitely doesn't do ceiling fans (in all fairness our condo has 12 foot ceilings so it's a huge pain), and by the point I realized it, it was pretty bad, lol...

We’re pretty tidy and vacuum prob every time we eat (kitchen area) and at least twice a week the whole house. Our cleaners however does the blinds (high up ones) and the ceiling fan and then vacuums after all the dust falls to floor. She also pulls up the rug and vacuums underneath. And as she’s wiping down kitchen and bathroom during the deep clean, dust and little crumbs go to floor which she vacuums up. So I feel like even though roomba does a good job, it’s a different type of vacuuming?

We did this when we had a cleaner. I didn't have our "man cave" area cleaned or any bedrooms other than the main one. But I did add some extra services, like vacuuming our living room furniture. My cleaner would sometimes rotate who came and I don't think this information was communicated clearly because sometimes I would come home and the bedrooms were all cleaned and sometimes they'd forget to vacuum the furniture, etc. This might just be a sign that we had a poorly run cleaning service, but they did a good job and were very affordable. I started leaving a note with exactly what to do every time since I was never there when they cleaned.

@PinkElephant: agree with this. Our kitchen and bathroom takes the most time so I don’t know that shaving off the bedrooms would help much cost wise! But of course you can ask and get quotes and sometimes people just pay by the hour too!

I think that’s perfectly reasonable. We have someone come in every 3 weeks and I leave a list of things we’d like done in order of priority and she completes whatever she has time to. She asked me for a list on her second visit and so far I really like it. She can also write notes back to me about specific areas and puts little checks so I know she’s completed it.
Works great for us.

You definitely can - however, you might not get as much of a "discount" as you expect for having fewer areas of your house cleaned, since they still have to make a trip to your house. I've found it depends on how local of a person/service you find, and if they are self employed or work for an overhead person/company that takes a cut of their pay.

We have it set up so that the kitchen/main bathrooms (master, kids', and downstairs guest bathroom) get cleaned every week, then the other weeks she alternates between doing the rest of the first floor and the upstairs (bedrooms and upstairs guest baths). By having my cleaning lady come every week, I save an average of $10/clean over what I'd pay per clean if she came every other week but cleaned the whole house.

We have our entire house cleaned but I think you can ask them to do whatever you want. You might want to leave a written reminder. My MiL finds is useful to have her cleaning person do the kitchen and bathrooms and then focus on ONE other thing each visit: for instance, the windows, the outside, master bedroom, baseboards. That way it’s a constant clean for the messy places and rotating deep clean for the less messy areas

We have someone clean biweekly, and I ask her to focus on deep cleaning the bathrooms and kitchen, and then she also mops/vacuuums whole house and then does mirrors and dusting of time permits. We have a similar situation as you, and we are good about tidying as we go each night. It’s just hard to ever get to the deep cleaning stuff so that’s what I hire out. I don’t want to pay someone to straighten up the house.

Absolutely! I currently don't have anyone doing this, but last time I did, I specified what they needed and don't need to do. I clean a lot myself and I only wanted them to focus on what I needed help with the most.

Yeah, you can ask a cleaning service to do whatever you want (or don't want - like skipping certain rooms). Most companies are happy to do cleanings to your specifications.

For sure, just get the rooms you need cleaned. You may need to be there the first time they do a partial house clean to remind them some rooms are off-limits/ out of the cleaning scope. I have found even when I say some rooms need not be touched during a full-house clean my cleaning service always tidys up in a small way at least. In your case you’re not paying for the extra rooms so may not be as problematic for them to stay out.

Warning: this is a quintessential first world problems post... We only started hiring someone for cleaning recently, and I feel like it is mostly useful in terms of having a deep clean for the kitchen and bathrooms. We don't have pets, don't allow food outside the kitchen, and don't allow shoes inside, so the roomba does pretty good with vacuuming outside the kitchen area. The cleaning person doesn't dust or do bed linens in any case.

We're moving to a house with more bedroom and living area space. I'm wondering if it's a thing to ask the cleaning person to just do the kitchen and bathrooms. I like to keep things in relatively good shape from day to day, so really it's about getting a deep clean. I feel like with more living/bedroom space, I'll just end up paying for a lot of vacuuming that the roomba could handle. Am I missing something? If anyone's done this, what's the cost relative to cleaning the full house? Thank you!
