I can't imagine hosting a bday party and not providing for everyone. Even if we host it at our house, we'll provide everything.

Yeah, I think it's expected. I personally wouldn't want to pay for all those people at a party place, so we stick to parks or just parties at home, with snacks and cake.

We are having LO's birthday party at a public park with a miniature train. We are buying everyone's train tickets and also bringing drinks and snacks even though there is a concession stand. I would be surprised if I went to a party and was required to pay for something.

I woudl expect to be paid for! A kid's party place, i woudl think dinner would be included and maybe a few game tokens, any more I would expect to pay for though.

We just had LO's party at a private game room, where the games costs, I made sure to bring several rolls of quarters so every child could play in additon to dinner/drinks/ect.

I would be very surprised to arrive at a party and pay any amount of money for the basic function of the place (admission at a zoo, rides at a carousel, admission at a museum, etc).

I've never had to pay for admission to any of the "venue parties" that my LO has been invited to. The host family has always covered admission for everyone and food.

I would expect the host to pay. We had a party at a popular kids play place for E's last birthday and paid for admission for all the kids and provided food for everyone. Adults were not charged admission.

We paid for our guests.
Once we had a party at a pizza place, and we bought pizza, beer, pop, salad, etc.

Another time we had a party at a children's play space/museum, and we played for unlimited play for each guest.

@T.H.O.U.: even at Disney if all the family made the special trip I would expect the "host" family to pay for the celebratory meal- the one with cake.

The only time I dont think you'd need to pay would be if you were doing something really big (like Disney) and just tell family, hey you're welcome to join us if you would like.

A friend of ours had a party at D&B for his kid and didn't pay for the adults food & drink, just the invited kids. I wasn't surprised that this friend did that, but I think munchies & non alcoholic beverages should be provided for everyone. I wouldn't expect the host to pay for adults to play arcade games, but admission fees- yes for both adults & kids.

@Bao: Glad he decided on the bowling alley! At the minimum (in my opinion) he should pay for the bowling/shoe rental for the kids and provide cake/ice cream (or similar dessert/snack).

I was brought up to believe it's tacky to host a party where you don't pay for your guests. If you can't afford admission or activities or food then you do something else.

@TemperanceBrennan: that's where he was thinking of having it!

I just texted him and he said he's having it at a bowling alley instead (whew) but no response as far as what we are responsible for. I'm not trying to sound cheap either but we have to plan for stuff like this, going out with a family of 4 isn't cheap these days...hence why we barely leave the house!

Yes, I think you pay for enough for your guests to get a "full experience". In some situations I think it is ok for guest to purchase additional add-ons as long as it is noted somehow (before the guest accepts/declines). The best way is in the invitation or through word of mouth.

For example, if the party is at Chuck E. Cheese's - I think that food and a small number of tokens should be included. If a guests wants to buy additional tokens, it's on them.

I'm having a co-ed bridal shower at a brewery. We are providing food, non-alcoholic drinks, and two drink tokens per person. If a guest wants additional beer, they'll have to buy it themselves.

@Bao: yes. If you are hosting the party, you pay for your guests. That's common courtesy. We got invited to a party at a farm a few weeks ago and declined because the cost wasn't included. It was going to cost us over $60 for the 3 of us to go. Plus then you have to give a gift!

Do you pay for others meals/activities or do you have each person pay their own way? BIL was talking about dates for his daughters party in a few weeks and also mentioned he's not providing for everyone. I didn't pry but I really hope he changes his plans of venue (he was up in the air, think crazy busy, pricey kids zone) or at least lets people know ahead of time so that they can plan ahead.

We had a party at a venue type place and paid for everyone's food. Wondering what the norm is where you live, or if it's just individual preference. If you don't pay, how do you inform others? Or is it tacky to assume a host would pay anyway and do you just bring enough money to cover what you would need?
